BUY A BASS!!!!!! there are NOT enough bass players in the world. it is SO GOD DANG HARD to find a bassist for a band. i know. i was in a band recording tracks in the studio and everything and we didnt have a bassist, we just randomly made a bass track for our songs, who knows how good those songs would have sounded with a sick bassline.
The way I see it, there are just too many guitarists in the world. If you can play both, people will ultimately be more impressed if you can play the one more people cannot play.

Agreed!!! thats why i am trying to learn Bass too, Cause i already play the Guitar.
I took up bass because I could kick a tree and five guitarists would fall out. Seemed more original and easier to find a band.
There's no such thing as "a" bass or guitar, though. They're not like apples or staplers. Guitars have a single price tag. Giving us one price for the generic concept of the instrument, like it doesn't matter what exact bass or guitar you're buying, is naive at best.
You want to look into buying something that plays well and has good value, because buying a bad instrument will turn you off of even wanting to play at all. What bass and guitar are we talking about?
I've been playing bass since I was 13. The chords are easier to remember than Csusmaj7 or whatever that is. And with a bass, you can play without using a pick. I think it sounds better without a pick. I'd suggest definitely going with bass.

But that is kind of a lazy way to pick an instrument, though, isn't it? You should have a little more passion. Bass is easier to pick up, but just as difficult to master. Think like that and you'll be well on your way to being a mediocre bassist.
You end up having to know the chord and scale shapes anyway if you want to do anything but follow the guitars mindlessly, throw a fill here and there, be able to solo and write your own bass lines competently. And also if you want to compose full songs - especially because bass is a terrible instrument to write on, if you're anything like me, in which case you'll want to know some guitar or piano for that. I had to develop a rudimentary ability on the keyboard purely out of a need to study theory on something that could play real chords.
