On April 26, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA).
"For all its flaws, SOPA targeted primarily overseas Web sites, not domestic ones. It would have allowed the U.S. attorney general to seek a court order against the targeted offshore Web site that would, in turn, be served on Internet providers in an effort to make the target virtually disappear. It was kind of an Internet death penalty targeting Web sites like ThePirateBay.org, not sites like YouTube.com, which are already subject to U.S. law. CISPA, by contrast, would allow Americans' personal information to be vacuumed up by government agencies for cybersecurity and law enforcement purposes, as long as Internet and telecommunications companies agreed. In that respect, at least, its impact is broader."
CISPA is a retread of SOPA that would allow the government to even further censor internet content to suit its own twisted objectives, and in the process of so doing collect information on people it doesn't like, for example people who visit conspiracy websites. Am I worried? Yes. The government has far too much power with no accountability or restraint as it is, and this new law would give them an even broader means to control and spy on the people while hiding behind the guise of "security." This is just another power-play by the government to try to install the "Big Brother" system to monitor, regulate, and periodically purge anyone who disagrees with or dislikes the government. Word needs to be spread about this and other threats to American freedom, and action needs to be taken to stop such invasive plots.
I think this country is slipping into an Orwellian novel....
CISPA is crap just like all the rest of these attempts. Unfortunately this time around there isn't support to stop it by large corporations. It has also already passed the house with pretty much only Obama's word that he will veto it to stop it from going through. (NDAA anyone?)
Look at the other hand, though. Look how many lives have been lost to cyber bullying. Should the FBI be able to see the messages I send my girlfriend? no, but I think someone should monitor these situations.
Ultimately, it lies on the company itself (facebook, twitter, etc.) to monitor these situations and snuff them out. They should have people to scan through messages being sent. I don't mind giving up a tiny section of privacy if it means saving lives. Besides, I have nothing to hide.

I fully agree and am horrified as I watch it slide

While I admire your thoughts and moral on this, I seriously dont think it would work. I dont trust ANY company to look thru my messages to check for "cyber bullying". And while I understand that its a difficult problem for someone to remedy, the onus is really on them and their close family and friends.

It's BS. When will the Internet finally stand up and retaliate against these lunatics? Eventually something will pass, and then more will pass. It will be the death of the greatest invention ever created. We will need to organize better, to be able to start up in the underground if necessary, for us to be able to share our interests, information, and for our entertainment.

If Obama comes through with this, he will go from mediocrity to gold in my eyes. This is one of those things that would actually directly affect me, and a president looking out for that is a good president.
