So, I have decided to make a thread about this, as I have thought a bit about what Colony was like back in the old days and I have seen some posts about it as well. So feel free to discuss about the changes the game has gone through, whether it be updates to the game or changes or playing style, players who have come and gone, what your first experience of Colony was like, what you remember, Colony stories, and other stuff about Colony back then.
So, to start it off...
I remember way back when the game first came out, me and my brother decided to try it out and started off with the missions. I'm pretty sure hotkeys weren't there when Colony came out, which is one of the reasons I stubbornly have refused to use them until recently. Trying out all of the units was fun, I couldn't wait to see what a black queen could do, given its massive time to build and cost. I also thought hover tanks could somehow "heal" your units when my CPU partner got them with medics as well :P We beat all of the missions I'll say fairly easily, and decided to try out multiplayer. We made an account for the game, "42maelstrom" and started playing. I remember I think there were two servers, and loads of players on each. Even then I remember a large number of glitchers and hackers. There were three governments to the game, capitalist, communist, fascist. Missile builds were fairly common in the games I played, and most strategies relied on teching except for the roman rush. I think there was only one unit that you got from influence when Colony first came out, the Modified Phantom. I had no idea about how influence was one except it had something to do with units on the field and that sometimes when I killed an enemy unit I got influence. Because of the missile builds, I started making a light, cheap unit in front of my base to protect it form missiles. Ranking up was our main goal. I remember being happy about Colony's rating moving from 8.9 to 9, but then disappointed when it was taken off of the "featured games" list. I remember raging when one of the updates to the game came and my rank was reset. I remember getting pretty bored of the game but still coming back every now and then to check it out again. Influence units were added to the Special Ops building like the far sniper and special forces squad. Later, the War Sanctum was added in another update, and the first time I encountered it in a game I thought the other player was hacking. I remember learning the game more and more, still sticking to teching up, and found that fascism was my favorite government to use because of its building speed. I remember when monarchy was added to the governments, and barely using it for the most part. The Saint and the Sphinx were added as well. Somewhere around then you had to make an Armorgames account to play, which is when I made this account, soccerdude2, and my brother went with 42maelstrom. I took another great break from the game and came back about 8 months or so ago. I started to learn the game in a different way, learning to pin the enemy's base and get units out early. I started doing 1v1s and learned some strategies, trying a few out of my own. I learned that the friendlist, kick, stats, and whisper options were in the game. The past few months then I've really started to play better, which leads me to where I am now.
To be honest I don't really remember another I played with when Colony was young except for some reason this guy whos username was something with deathwish.
That is basically my Colony story, it seems a bit much now but I had a lot worth telling and it was kinda cool remembering stuff I hadn't thought about for a long time.
So yeah I know I'm not really a great player or really well-known, but I thought this thread would be worth starting.
But in all seriousness, Colony had a considerable impact on my life, much more than any other flash game ever had. I first played it when I was 12, and now I'm 15 and I still play it occasionally.
For around 30% of my Colony career, I was pretty much unknown. When Jetzul came out, I spent most of my time there. It was in Jetzul that I had met the people who, despite how briefly I knew them, gave me the push I needed from being completely unknown to becoming the leader of one of this game's biggest clans. There was a guy I met only once who I had never seen again; his name was something along the lines of shadowflame. At that time, I had some knowledge of the clans that existed, such as FYCN and EC. Having dominated Jetzul as the only half-decent player who ever played there, I had the thought that I could start a clan too. I knew even then that I didn't want to make an elitist clan like all the other clans that had already been made. I wanted to make a clan with noobs and pros and everything in between. I proposed the idea to shadowfire, with whom I had stomped a few games with. He wasn't a particularly close friend of mine. He just happened to be there, but he agreed with my proposal and he said that it was a good idea. Thus, Sauce clan was born from two nameless Jetzul scrubs.
Later, I met a friend who stayed with me for quite some time: coolace45. He was not the best player I had ever seen, but that didn't matter to me. I recruited him instantly. After a bit more Jetzul roaming, I met a peculiar guy named KILLERMACHINE or something like that, and he had his own clan. The KILLER clan, consisting of (from what I saw) KILLERJUXA, KILLERKNIGHT, and himself, was Sauce clan's first rival. There had been this norm back then that clans would meet in Team Channel to do whatever they did. Naturally, Sauce clan and KILLER clan were in Team Channel at the same time, and the result was our first clan war. At 11:30pm, sitting on my bed with my old laptop and playing with the touchpad, I had participated in my first clan war, which coolace and I won.
In time, Krin removed Jetzul and combined all the servers into one larger server. In truth, I had stayed away from the likes of Glastondale because I didn't like pros. They were intimidating. Kowai desu. With this new update, however, I had no choice but to play in the same server and talk in the same lobby as all the pros. I quickly learned that among the other Colony regulars, there were plenty of nice, friendly people. NubSauce, Almostsauce, speekz, and others became some of my best friends on Colony.
Some of the earlier members of Sauce clan may have joined just for fun since it seemed like such a lackadaisical group, or because they weren't good enough for the elitist clans. Whatever their original reasons were, many of the most well-known and prominent members of Sauce clan had been with me since the beginning, and I believe that I had managed to become friends with all of them.
The clan grew, and as my skills starting improving, I started making more of a name for myself. I realize that many of the older pros at the time must have thought that I wasn't very good at all, and I agree with them. Regardless, I was more recognized than I was back in the Jetzul days.
Summer vacation came, and I graduated from elementary school. With nothing important or serious to do for two months, I created the Sauce clan website. I created forums on it, I made the members page, and I eventually made the old mission challenges and ranked game system. Though they were not very popular and maybe only a few people really enjoyed them, I did feel a bit accomplished. Throughout the break, the clan grew even more. At that point, Sauce clan started being recognized as a serious and active clan, alongside the elitist clans that had been around since forever. People did not recognize Sauce because our pros were better than other pros. It was recognized for its active members, its friendliness, and perhaps its sheer size.
lolya and CCP was hilarious
At some point, I started recording videos of Colony with hypercam and I uploaded them to youtube. None of my videos had any audio, since I didn't bother putting the raw files into movie maker or vegas or anything. I only uploaded the raw avi files. There was something, though, about the amateurish nature of the videos that made them really memorable for me.
I think there was only one unit that you got from influence when Colony first came out, the Modified Phantom.
No both Mod phantom, mod sakata and special forces were availible but they all cost 100 influence, which twas the max back then.
I remember raging when one of the updates to the game came and my rank was reset.
Version 5.0 reset the stats because you had to log into AG to be able to play.
Version 2.something was when more influence units came out. I forget exactly which ones but i know it did happen. This was before the war sanctum but that came a couple weeks later with the saint. The next update is when sphinx came in. Versions 3.0-3.whatever were the updates to get colony onto the other websites like newgrounds. 4.0 was when monarchy came out... i think anyway. The costs of influence units went down. 5.0 was for login with armorgames. Friendlist and such were added. Also somewhere in the 4.0-5.0 range was the first time that gladiators got a buff. 6.0 came and the gladiator and sakata got buffs. This is basically all i can remember i might remember more if someone reminds me of something XD

Hmmm I don't remember a mod phant costing that much? I thought it was around 50-65. Now I remember special forces were there as well, but I always thought modikata came later.
