Would anyone be interested in short programming class that I or anyone competent in programming would teach? It would be a small class with some readings and assignments. I know most of you are busy as so am I so it wouldn't be like University level. But it would be an introduction nerveless maybe a much needed push for some people to start with programming or those who need some structure.

I could teach Actionscript 3, Python or Java (I'm the most proficient with this language). I know some other languages but I doubt anyone wants to learn something as abstract and mathematical as Haskell or as low level as Assembly.

This is just a post to see how many people are interested and in what language.

Hmm. I have a Java Programming Book. I never got into it. The stupid IDE made me mad. I think it told me to download the JRE, which I did, and the JDK, which I did, and the JCreator IDE. Which I did....

Anyways, this sounds like a nice idea. I'm gonna try again on my Java book tomorrow, maybe tonight. I went with C++ but it was too hard for me to grasp, so I'm trying to go way down on the scale. I've been playing around with Game Maker lately lol... Everyone has to start somewhere though...

Ever thought about actionscript 3.0 and flash?

Me? Well I don't really have the money to get CS5. Or CS6, whatever they have now....

And I want to go easy at first. Unless Flash isn't that hard...

So I hear, Flash has a lower learning curve than most other languages. And you can start by directly coding to the stage which is what most beginner programmers do. Most programmers do not do this as it is messy. However, I have to admit it helps you get to grips with the language.

Flash is not very hard to learn. Of course, you need to understand the language at first. However, all you need is an .fla and classes, and you are ready to go. The .fla has a library which you can directly integrate with classes. And do you know how much time that saves? The free version of the Unity engine (a Java/C# 3D engine which specialises in game creation) requires asset importing. Flash does not require much knowledge about importing (unless it is Flash's default classes or classes from another folder, in which case you need to learn what to import.)

I recommend Flash. I reckon it is a great way to get started. And if money's really the issue... well... like a fellow developer said, "You can get a 30-day free trial. Otherwise, the full version of Flash is $699. The non-commercial/partial version $199. I once got it for neither $699 or $199. But don't tell anyone." You gotta start somewhere. But be sure to buy it after you want to publish a game on the Internet. Otherwise... prison...I hear people can get ***** there. Though I guess that's better than work.

Anyway, enough ranting. You choose if it's the thing for you.

I see. I might do Flash then, I don't know yet.

I might do Python instead.

Darkroot,
When are the classes scheduled? I'd be willing to answer questions and assist with the classes depending on the time-frame and workload.

Sorry for the delay just had midterms.

Flash is the program actionscript 3 is the language that is used. I would say it is intermediate or intermediate low on the "hardness" scale. I wouldn't say many programmers program on a stage, I personally wouldn't program on the stage either you can import or whatever it is called in flash, the as3 files and probably build a directory with packages like that.

Darkroot,

Soonish, about 4-5 people have registered and I'm waiting for a bit more since I know at least a third will vanish before it starts and a bit afterwards. I'll probably wait a week and a half before I start.

Ever thought about actionscript 3.0 and flash?

I did and I decided against it, most people here don't have a large sum of money so I decided to use only free resources like the book and the language. Granted we could work with flex an as3 but I think java would be more useful in the end.

Also I guess I can announce that we will be using Eclipse as the development environment. It is a bit confusing but it is by far the best free development environment in general. Haven't decided on a book but it will also be a free resource.

I don't have the money for CS5 or CS6 but I've been using it for years now.... :/

I think I have a space unity key somewhere when they were giving it away for free. You can have it if you want.

Hey what sort of toolset of programming languages would be good for an all-round programmer?

I don't know, it depends on what you are doing it's not like there is only one type of programmer. I would say html/css/javascript, python, java, C++ is pretty standard knowledge base. For web dev you will need html 5 (depends), php/mysql. A student will probably encounter C, a purely functional language like Haskell and assembly maybe mathlab and VHDL. With addition to two more langaguges.

Well, probably not web developer type. More like software engineer or game programmer
