As far as I can see we will eventually reach a point in our population growth beyond which our species will no longer be able to fully support itself with the resources available. At that time we may be in a position to look towards other planets for colonization, but thats difficult and expensive, not to mention improbable and impractical on a large scale. More likely I imagine when the population can no longer be supported there will become intense competition for resources, war, and a lot of people going hungry. Suffice to say, quality of living will go down.
So what do you guys think about countries that have child bearing restrictions? For example, only allowing couples to have one child
Not to jump in too quick, but I actually thought about an answer to this question and realised something, which I wrote about on the previous page. The relevant passage was this:
You know, perhaps it might be a good thing to separate the notion of monogamous relationships out into its components- raising kids and having relationships. This human social institution never was all that suited to humans in the first place, and secondly it would go a long way to solving those 'incentive problems' that we've been looking at. Looking back at old models, reinstilling the value of 'child bearing as a civic duty' just might provide some basis for a more manageable population control.
In short, I think things such as "1 child policy" will not work given that we also assume monogamous pairings and nuclear family units.
However if we were freed from this social institution by reforming it, we might have more conceptual room to persuade people as a whole of the importance ('civic duty' of proper rates of childbearing.
Heh. Main flaw with this proto-argument is that we're already in the era of individuality such that people want to enjoy living out their own preferences, and the total costs here might be too much. So we'd have to think about foregoing this 'individualist' movement in favor for more community-based endeavors, which I can at least guess is actually starting to happen.
the food price is rising because of inflation or w.e because all the corn farmers are growing corn for useless ethonal, they get more money that way, instead of food which causes less food and more demand = prices rise
Yes the world is too overpopulated but it doesnt help that were using most of our crops to make fuel for cars CUT BACK PEOPLE! There is a plus side though in the face of this problem along with disease and such, now maybe the woorld can band together and try to find a way to live on other planets. Down side alot of countries are at war right now and dont care about the consequnces by the time they relize their mistake it will already be too late. Sry the last part was kinda unrealted
What bothers me most about the one child policy is what they do to families if they don't follow it. I have heard horror stories of what they have done to children in China. They kill their daughters because if they can only have one child, they want it to be a son. I also heard about a couple that were having a child, and did not apply to register the child in time with the government before the child was born. So they came in, took the child, and killed it.
Carlie: sexism plays a very large role in it, as you saw. I think that too needs to be addressed.
I remember I wanted to ask something to a response to the original question- "Is the world too (sic) overpopulated?"

No. People who study population trends say that the population will cap at around 12 billion, then take a sharp decline to the point where under-population may be a problem.
In third world nations, having children is actually profitable as the kids will start working young and bring in money. When nations industrialize, the cost of raising kids shoots through the roof.
I'm wondering whether it's proper to assume that enough nations will industrialise to this extent- currently much of the effect of globalisation is that many population dense countries are resource rich but happen to be poor because they are exploited and generally kept in that state of lacking the infrastructure to industrialise.
Furthermore there are some very strong cultural traditions surrounding large families in some countries- how significant will this be in influencing population levels?
Well I don't really think it is overpopulating. Because they do you think people died? Too old? Well, Their is a Myth that god makes people die because to save mankind and not overpopulating. He made people die for so they would have a better life in Heaven and not too have much a large amount of people on such a small planet like Earth. Years after come, People develop their ages and get higher and older. Like in the 1900's, The people only lived for about untill 50. Now we live until maybe 70-90+ Oldest person living today is 122. Imagen in the future how long we could live. Maybe up too 200+. Which would be like that and our Earth would surly grow.
Erm...so what I understood by your paragraph was that the Earth's population is growing because the life expectancy is rising?
Well...maybe that has something to do with it. But population = births - deaths, so you also need to account for the birthrates. (On a side note, mortality rates are also an indication that a birthrate of 2 children is not actually going to keep the population levels stable!)
Then there's another topic I'd like to bring up- the dynamics of aging. It is widely known that an aging population means that the issues facing the community change: welfare, health in particular. It is thought that physiologically speaking, human bodies, even optimally cared for, may not survive for longer than 120 years. However much research is going into defying this seemingly natural law, and seeking immortality.
Population dynamics is one thing that will have a huge say in how widespread any successful application of such is.
Yes because over the years, People have developed and started getting older and older. In maybe 2089, people could live until about 100. But everyone sure does have to die. That is the hole point of living. Using what you know on Earth and telling everyone and enjoying life. But everyone dies. God usually does it if he misses someone. Or when Jesus was born. God brought him down to Virgin Mary and Joseph, Mary wasn't pregnant. The angels of haven came down and talked to Mary in her dreams and said. "Hello Mary, I am an Angel form Heaven, You are going to have a baby and you are going to name is Jesus".
After that the angel went to Joseph, and told him to marry Mary and they are going to have a child from God. . . .
After on, They have gotten married. Later Jesus was about 20, And everyone in his village had sicknesses and problems. At first no one believed him. But after he saved a child's life, and everyone gathered around him to hear his speech everyday. But government saw that Jesus was saying he was God's son, they did not belive him all, and said he was guilty. So, he had to be killed. The same ways the robbers and stealers we're. After he got hanged. Jesus told everyone and helped them and said.
"Everyone! Don't worry, I will take all your sins and take them to my father!"
After he got hanged, he was next to a robber and a stealer. But they also believed in Jesus and God was his son. So Jesus took their sins away, and they wouldn't have to go to Hell. But after Jesus and he couldn't hold his breathe no longer. He died, Later, they buried him, a couple days later they wanted to see if everything is alright in the Grave. But after they opened the grave. Jesus.. Was.. not.. their. Only his cloths. Soon after the Jewish people have believed that Jesus was really God's Son.
