It pisses me off to no end when people who have no idea about what rap is like starts talking about how it is all sex, money and drugs, and that therefore the whole genre is ****. Newsflash, rap music doesn't need to have meaningful lyrics, and it is okay for them to talk about money, sex and drugs! If the rapper has a nice flow and the production is tight, the song is going to be fun and enjoyable to listen to, despite the topic of the lyrics. The lyrics don't need to be sentimental or meaningful as long as it is written well and rapped well. I'd rather listen to a rapper that talks about being a hardcore G that ****s female dogs and gets money, but does it well (Ambitionz Az A Ridah - 2Pac), rather than some rapper that tries to be deep and refelective but does it poorly (Tragic - Grieves).
Don't get me wrong though, I have nothing against conscious rap, it can actually be great, like Public Enemy, Common, Mos Def, etc., but I'm just saying that just because a rapper isn't rapping about social issues doesn't mean he is automatically bad. Exceptions however would include the typical mainstream garbage like Tyga and Soulja Boy..
The lyrics don't need to be sentimental or meaningful as long as it is written well and rapped well.
Rap is never written well or "rapped" well as u say it.
Rap is Cr@p, stick to oldies man, like the good old English bands that came in the 1960s. or even old country rock n' roll its very disappointing to see what music has turned into these days and how its affecting people in ways they may not know.
Oh and people! its time to stand up for this! for the people who are like me! ones that know where its going and how its gonna be! we need to join together and not be sucked into all this G@y music like lady gaga or any rap any meaningless sh*t! we need to stick together!

That's really what many of these common complaints on modern music stem from: obsessions with an idealized past that never really happened. It's the same feeling that made you remember the monkey bars at school being fifty feet tall.

I can't believe people still think it's sophisticated/cool to resolutely dismiss a genre as diverse as hip hop/rap.

You got to be kidding me. Everyone has their own taste in music just because you think rap is garbage doesn't mean it is garbage. I rather kill myself than to listen to that red neck stuff.

Actually it does. A good rap song is a song you can actually relate to, why do you think Biggie and 2Pac were so well known. Every gangster living in the projects could relate songs to their everyday problems.
Your rant went in the worst direction possible. There are rappers who actually have some substance to their songs and those people are true musicians. You an rap or sing about doing drugs all the time, and you would be loved by a large community, but they would be too ****ed up to know what they're even listening to. A good musician will write something that will appeal to people who actually want to hear MUSIC, rather than what they're told to hear.

you obviously think times has changed move on huh?? is that what you mean?? yea when you change it should be for the greater good and changing from classic Beatles, all the way to rap singing aboout drugs and sex doesnt seem like the greater good. understand??

Times change, some people move on, others like you don't. Deal with it! People have their own tastes in music. The Rolling Stones, The Ramones, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, they were all hated and reviled in their day; yet today all are legends in their own right. Tastes change, they never remain wholly static.

Remind me who the hell back in those days making music wasn't sky high on drugs and engaged in free love, then come back and wash your hypocritical face in a bowl of LSD. Just because it's about drugs and sex, doesn't mean it's tasteless or bad.
It is the ''greater good'' (Ha! As if music has to be for some noble, great cause!) since it seems that the vast majority of youths enjoy pop music infused with rap.

You're joking, right? Plenty of songs before the Beatles were even born were talking drugs and sex. Look at this one by Stuff Smith talking about smoking dope in 1936

And this one by Lucille Bogan talking about necrophilia.

You sir, are a hypocrite.
really?? how old are you anyways??
Certainly older than you, and thats all that matters.
Besides, if you really detest the rap/hip-hop industry, then show your protest and disdain by not buying anything they produce. The dollar hurts a hell of a lot more than anyone's words. And if you subscribe to the whole 'no such thing as bad publicity', you might want to be quiet before you inadvertantly lead others to your self-proclaimed Jew/Great Satan/Etc of music.

My mistake, I worded it wrong and I guess you didn't see the point as to what I was trying to say. I agree with what you are saying 100%, I am just trying to express my anger at those like cooldownman who think a whole genre is bad just because it talks about sex and drugs.
Cooldownman, you are an idiot and a hypocrite of the highest order.
Every genre sings about sex and drugs. Except Christian music. The point is, you can't hate rap for that reason and then go and say that other genres that do the same thing are better.
Arguing to defend music of today against your claims that it's just aural torture.
The Beatles are singing about then as Mav pointed out. And don't forget, they were often in the limelight for such antics; it's all about the overall package too.
Probably older than you, since I'm an adult. But why are you bothered by such puerile indicators of "maturity"?
