In an effort to procrastinate doing everything...okay, really simply to revise my material for next semester when I start working at hospitals (but the first one sounds less dorky D

...anyway...

In an effort to revise my material, I'm inviting each and every one of you to ask any questions you had on the human body (and mind). As long as it's medical, it can be pretty much anything- and I'll attempt to answer it as quickly as possible, hopefully off the top of my head.

HAVE AT IT

I think I have a question we can all relate to:

Why the hell do those mosquito bites itch so much? Sorry if it's out of your area of expertise or anything.

Octobokid95:

i heard that one ear hears music better than the other one... is this true?

Wow. You got me beat there. I actually have no idea.

Ultimately, whilst the auditory sense is lateralised so that you can hear the location of sound sources, I don't think there'd necessarily be any preference for a particular ear by the time the music was processed as ultimately music generally requires input from both hemispheres.

I do know however that the centers for the understanding and making of speech is lateralised according to handedness. Almost every right-handed person's speech center lies on the left side of the brain. But about 20% of left handed people have their speech centers in the right side, and about 70% of them have it in both to varying degrees!

The basic answer is that the mosquito saliva, which acts as an anticoagulant, also happens to be an irritant which can cause an allergic reaction of sorts. This is the reaction that has you coming up with an itchy red bump that can be REALLY BLOODY ANNOYING D:<

I know it well.

Thanks Strop, now I know the dozens of red itchy bumps all over my body are caused by mosquito spit! : D

One more somewhat related question: What is itching?

Here's one for ya:

Someone I know has been having a strange feeling in this person lungs for several months. And now they say is getting more frequent and lasting longer. They say it feels like a tickling in my lungs. And sometimes they say it is like a hollow feeling. It was just at night and now it is happening during the day too. what exactly would this be considered?

Researches have been hard at work trying to answer this question and, strangely enough, have yet to come up with anything approaching a real description!

fst sent a picture (on page 16):

Hm, I see a friction spot at the top-most part, which I assume is where your heel rubs against your shoe the most. It does seem that what you have is calcium deposits (more likely than bony spurs). The cause of these things are yet unknown, so anything I say here is rather speculative- but would you say that your heels experience a lot of trauma?

Hrm, the terms 'hollow feeling' and tickling can be rather subjective, but let's see...

Does your acquaintance report any change in their breathing? Is there any coughing or phlegm? Do they smoke? Are they on any other medication, especially mood or heart medications? Also, if it's not too personal, how old are they, are they male or female, and how would you describe their weight and build?

Given that they've reported that it used to happen at night, how many pillows do they sleep on?

This is not a medical question!

Haha, also, don't you start this "unaustralian" rubbish with me, I'm Asian as it is :P Besides, soccer's a much more popular sport here anyway.

Truth be told, by locality, I suppose I'd have to barrack for Carlton...I mean, I live directly opposite the MC Labour arena...but am I going to do that? I do like an underdog and they've got some good players (like Fevola, and do I need to mention Judd, duh)...but really. They're barely getting off the bottom of the table even now!

Anyway, this is spectacularly off-topic!

Not a medical question....humph...yes it is, because surely there must be something wrong with your brain if you go for Carlton!

Anyway, back on topic!

I was stabbed with a Biro, and now I have small black dots on my arm where I was stabbed. Is this dangerous?

BTW - Are you a neat writer?

:O

I'm telling ya, I'm just a local...but I'll book myself in for an MRI...

Anyhow, with the biro, modern ink is generally non-toxic, and if it's just ink stains that you've got, or even possibly small clots from the ruptured blood vessels, that should be okay.

I remember sucking on my pen one afternoon and it leaked all over my tongue. Biro ink tastes FOUL, yeech.

Am I a neat writer? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. But most times my writing is quite legible. I've a ways to go yet! xD

Lol, when I was little, my dog ripped a cheap-pen open and left the ink stuff there, and I started to suck it out to see what it tasted like and I got it in my mouth and it tasted like poop, and I thought I was going to die. Lol good times.

Why am I so addicted to video games?
(I hope thats a medical question lol)

Skin that is dry, inflammed or affected by an allergic reaction can also itch like crazy. Dandruff (caused by a range of things, ranging from fungus to inherited seborrheic dermatitis), can also be associated with scalp itch. So in short, there are a number of causes.

The best way to find out if you have head lice is basically to look. They should actually be visible around the roots of the hair.
