So I thought I would make a new thread of my art from 2012 onwards. I am quite a keen artist and I hope to become a full-time working artist in the future. I mainly work in Sculpture as my prefered medium but also do an assortment of 2D pieces mainly relating to my GCSE Art Projects so in each one I'll explain the ideas behind it. I'll keep updating this thread with all my art and would love feedback. Both critical and positive are welcome. I'll start with a sculpture I did a couple years back which represents war and destruction, inspired by an artist I personally know. It was my first bigish sculpture made out of foam board, white acrylic and bits of wire all on a canvas; I made it for my schools Art competition which it won ^-^

Thanks, took a while to make, measuring and scoring everything out, it is composed of three floors connected by slots. The last side (A3) had to fit perfectly into 26 slots.

Anyway here are a couple more drawings I've done. I focused on contour lines in this project I did, heres a sea shell in biro ^-^

This one is similar, coloured ink and a dip pen using induvidual strokes; took forever and failed a bit at the shadowing but oh well. Both are size A3.

Wow, that's actually pretty good there mate! I just love the cross-hatching on that seashell...
Any chance of us getting some more of that kind of action?

If you want some tips on the second one (if you don't, I suggest not reading anymore), I'd suggest keeping your darks/shadows in check. There is never a that dark of a color... you should give your darks some sort of yellowish/brownish shade... unless you're trying to draw a zebra or something. You should also try to make the progression from yellow to brown a bit more subtle, unless you want a really dramatic sort of shadow (and this isn't exactly James Bond)... that dark line that divides the brown and yellow parts should definitely fly away peacefully.

Unless, of course, the image is playing with my mind, and my thoughts are utterly irascible and foolish.

Thanks for the feedback, I completely agree with you. I used I believe three different coloured inks because I didn't have any other colours with me so the colours are slightly made up. Definitely too dark and the shadows not great, I'll post a couple more similar pieces shortly.
And thankyou @jojo541 .

Ah no worries mate. One can only get better at something!

And I actually think you're better than I am ;:P I just know some theory, that's that.

I like it. It reminds me of a post apocalyptic environment from one of my favorite RPG games. Fallout 2 Also, you could try to make the war scene. Create a model of the tank and some soldiers and then deploy them properly on the field.I think it would be fantastic.

I wonder what materials you used to make something like this? I think they are some sort of gypsum boards, or hard-pressed cardboard which is subsequently coated with white plaster, or beomal ?!? Am I on the right track?

I want to tell you something about the details, but remember this is just my opinion. First, I like the way you presented the holes in the building, they appear to be random, they have not been performed by some template and especially I like the way you presented the steel construction (rebar) within these holes. At the moment it may seem like the holes were created by some kind of a natural disaster or by construction machinery with the gigantic steel destroyer ball.

Bricks or blocks which are located in an environment gives special charm to your work of art. But, I have a suggestion, for allocation and quantity of the bricks. Try to imagine how would the bricks blew apart in one such blow. Some bricks would had to stay inside the building, some would be crushed and some would dropped to the surface. Now, the one that would dropped to the surface could not stay the whole, their integrity would be compromised. I'm trying to tell you that their edges and shapes should not
look perfect.I also recommend you to make a pile of bricks on the surface, but why? That pile of bricks could illustrate what you can not conjure with the building walls. They would give a sense of massiveness,
if you understand what I want to tell you.

I have some other suggestions. The holes you made on the walls are great, that is a fact, but somehow I kind of miss the holes which should be located on platforms (floors). I think you would achieve deeper
3D effect. In this case, light would be refracting, thereby creating shadows in a certain area to make it look more realistic.

The next suggestion refers to the building walls. Some cracks in the walls would be nice. But you should not exaggerate with it. Two, three the most, cracks would be sufficient. But the choice is yours in any case.

When I was in the high school I made a lot of these models, although the buildings were entire, I'm not sure we are looking at this from the same angle. Modeling as a subject pretends to be more realistic and follows the laws of physics, while on the other hand art modeling is looking for something completely different. I gave my criticisms based on the construction (physics) modeling. My overall judgment is that this is an extraordinary work of art. I'd like you to try to make a medieval castle.

That's pretty impressive work, Ice, and for someone quite young, I forget what age you mentioned somewhere. Keep it up, and keep at it

Purely foam board, it has a styrofoam core covered with paper.

At the moment it may seem like the holes were created by some kind of a natural disaster or by construction machinery with the gigantic steel destroyer ball.

I was influenced by an artist I personally know so you can see some similarity. I spent up to 3 hours marking each side out precisely measuring every single thing, the width of the windows, spaces, slots etc. I was trying to create the aftermath of shells going right through the building as you can sort of see but not knowing how the artist did it, improvised in my own way. The steal rebars are actually not in the right pattern, they should be in a grid like pattern.
Regarding the rest of your points, I had planned to destroy it furthur and add telephone wires, satellite dishes and make it look more old and crumbling but this was done in a few weeks so I had to rush a lot of it. So I do agree with you. Bear in mind I was only 13 at the time.
Thankyou @Macll it was my first bigish sculpture actually and have done several more, bigger and better.

From the biro drawing of a shell, I did an etching from it and then printed it.

Here's another contour line drawing of another shell but using coloured pencils which are closer to the true colours of the shell. These are all for my Natural World project so you can understand the relation.
