Warning - end game crazy wizard level discussion here:
Out side of the first wave where mana is a concern, what grade gem do you use for enrage when you're trying to max XP?
Let's say you only want to set up a level 60ish kill gem, which will get you in the E31-E32 neighborhood in damage. I typically enrage until I'm somewhere in the E33 HP range. Question is - what do you use that gets you the most XP on the way to E33? I've been using a lvl 27 gem, cause that seemed to be the most efficient, but I'll admit I haven't experimented with too much higher level than that.

Higher grade is more efficient if you can afford it. I ususally use gems 15-20 grades lower than killing gem, g45 is my favourite.
what is E33 ?
and how did you get so far to create a grade 27 gem ?
I have reached wizzard level 84 now but with a starting mana of 3.944
i can only dream of creating a level 9 gem during a game ....
and leveling up is getting harder and harder (using traits) with every
field. what's the trick ?
E33 is scientific notation for a number followed by 33 0s.
The next leap you'll take in this game is the mana farm - there are a number of threads here that go in to the details, but the gist of it is you combine Orange, Red, and either Black or White in a trap placed somewhere all monsters will walk over. With some patience, you can get to some ridiculously high mana/gem levels.
wizard level 60 is plenty to make grade 9's during a battle.
The key, in the early game, is to anger according to the following algorithm:
First, look at the managain per monster. (multiply it out if you want, or use the basegain if you are feeling nervous).
assuming a reaver wave, select the grade according to the following chart. (assumes no points in forge)
less than 15: don't anger.
15+: grade 1
45+: grade 2
72+: grade 3
120+: grade 4
260+grade 5
-using this will maximize the managain per angering.
step 2: anger till the armor is about 1/2 the minimum damage of your "killgem". Go with 1/4th if you're feeling nervous, or 3/4ths if you're feeling bold.
note: on levels with red, yellow, AND black, you can anger much higher.
THEN you can look into making a manafarm.
to be honest i am confused with all this stuff.
when some of you "experts" discuss or post screenshots i feel
like in another universe.
are the numbers from 15 to 120 managain ?
and then armor, not hp, compared to my "killgem" (i assume you
mean the strongest gem in the path ...) ?
can i see the managain before the wave starts ?
otherwise it would be too late to anger ?
i love this game, but it's so hard on some fields.
did you learn all this stuff from the previous gemcraft games ?
i beat them, but i never saw anything like in those screenshots (zillions of mana and xp) posted here.

pause.
hover mouse over wavestone.
you want to look at this:
"managain per monster: 28*1.05*1.28".
That's 35 mana, which is between 15 and 45, so use a grade 1.

Strangely enough, yes. Pay attention to the armor, use the correct gem grade, and everything else will simply fall into place. Though, do use common sense: if they start overwhelming your defenses, cut back on the angering.
Just don't try to apply it to swarms, and be VERY cautious angering anything with shielding. That's a fast way to get swamped via sheer numbers.

Labyrinth, mostly-it's the most similar in mechanics. I had some difficulty with the startup phase because I was used to being so much more powerfull.
The previous chapters may be beaten by the simpler "supergemming" trick, by combining grade 1's into a grade 3.
