Well, it all started when I was walking out of Buffalo Wild Wings with my friends, and I saw these two kids, one was about 7 and one was about 9, they each had their own cell phones, it looked as if they just got them.
I personally thought that it was ridiculous that a 7 and 9 year old had their own cell phones, there would be no use for it.
What are your views on what age you should own a cell phone?

I believe that children that are too young to stay home alone/go outside unattended are too young to have cellphones. Once you get to be around 13 is the time where your parents typically allow you to be home alone and walk to other places alone is what I believe - and once you reach this age, you should have a cellphone for security.
However, if you are too young to do any of these things - why would you need a phone?
It's funny, really, that 20 years ago we thought that all of our technology would be on wristwatches. Look how Cellphones have escalated!
Actually, I don't really see a problem with kids getting cell phones. Yes, argue with me about it! I got mine just this past Christmas so I was 15 but why don't you guys think kids should get them earlier?
By 7 and 9, those kids are already on the internet exploring sites. Do you guys think they are immature? Interesting how some of you said maturity has nothing to do with age in another thread. If they drop their kids off for sports, the kid should have a cell phone. It's not like he/she is going to use that cell phone to kill you. Honestly, the reason a kid has that cell phone is none of your business.

Well like all the kids are growing up stupid and immature so they probably been to few porn sites too. Why dont you give them an Iphone so they can look at nasty stuff on their phone too!

I never said it had to be an Iphone. The whole point for a cell phone is to get ahold of the parents at times. I already mentioned sports but it could be at other random times like if they got in a car accident. I know that is not likely but what if they got lost in the woods. I think cell phones just can be used as a protection.

Too dependent? This thread is like saying, "You don't need a computer." Yes, it is good communication but you could just go to the library. "You don't need a car when you are older." Cars make it easier but you could call a taxi or take the bus.
Easier means nothing. Because something takes less time or less strenght to do, its not really more enjoyable. What happens is that we get excited when see new things but once they blend into to our normal life style then its just normal again and its no easier...its the same feelingn whether you were walking or driving to the store.

Okay so why don't they change the legal driving age to 21? Don't start arguing about the age because it is just a point. I mean those damn 16 year olds cause so many accidents. You are basically saying we shouldn't let kids grow with technology. I think we should because what is their cell phone doing to you? I am really curious why so many of you say they don't need it. Okay, and if they have a cell phone, is that going to kill you? Seriously, them having a cell phone has nothing to do with you. It just gives the parents more of a feeling of safety knowing they can have communication with their kid anytime.

Thats not bad enough? Seems bad to live in a world with over protective parents. Cmon the stupid commercials now show bacteria 10000000 their real size and show it kills anything it touches.

How is a cell phone being over protective? Now, if they call their kid every 5 minutes, that is overprotective but I am sure the kid would rather have that then the parent be with them. Actually, cell phones give them freedom from their parents. Now kids are allowed to walk in stores by themselves because they have a cell phone. I don't think that is necessarily smart but if you want to argue about it being over protective, there you go.

Well, you can't blame the kids that have cell phones for that. I suggest you go to your parents and tell them I could be put in emergency situations so I need it. Tell them you want to feel protected. That's what I did and I got mine.
I really do feel that anyone under the age of 15 doesn't need a cell phone. (given there are some exceptions)
The only purpose I can a child at the age of 8 or so having a cell phone is so mommy and daddy can keep tabs. But what is an 8 year old doing that they need a cell phone? Nothing! They should be outside playing. We have gone CENTURIES without kids having cell phones, why do they need them now? They don't. It is a luxury item that an 8 y/o has no business owning.
Well technology growing fast and its sooner or later Asher. I think we should slow down and catch up! We are not even able to adjust to the rapid advancements.
Not to mention all the 3rd world countries who are wayyy behind us
It is almost surreal to see African tribes on TV. Some who have never seen anything digital. They live in huts, hunt for food. I mean it doesn't seem real. I need to take a trip there to really get a grasp on the world around me.
