The Pompei, a Belgian-registered ship believed to have a mostly Belgian and Croatian crew, was one of two vessels that came under attack near the Indian Ocean island nation of Seychelles on Saturday, the sources said.
The second ship escaped the attack after a brief exchange of gunfire with pirate vessels, the pirate source added.
Meanwhile, Dutch naval forces captured seven pirates and freed 20 captive fishermen after tracking the pirates to their "mother ship" in the western Gulf of Aden on Saturday, a NATO maritime spokesman said.

Recently according to the above article, Somali pirates hijacked a ship, taking the captain and his crew as hostages. Eventually they had snipers come in and shoot three of the pirates to show them they mean business! Of course the traumatized captain is now hailed a hero for being a captive.

I'd be inclined to agree with you there. They probably just handed them out because the media was making it high-profile & are trying to either curry favour with the populace for the armed forces, or encourage people to sign up.

It was a well executed op and all, but the pirates didn't have the chance to return fire. Not exactly above or beyond the call of duty, just proffessional.

That's exactly what I thought when I read the post that asked why they didn't get medals. That's just what they're trained to do, they didn't have to do anything special.
