Sorry for the double post, but I just saw that statement and felt the need to say that you sir are, one, wrong; and two, you need to read my posts in the above link.

I read your other post, Ninja. I saw a lot of opinions, but nothing to indicate why for-profit companies would be interested in maintaining a support network for the disabled, the abused, the abandoned, the sick...? There is no profit in these demographics, only loss of money. And it is only government, through the ethical imperative of its people, which can realistically give these people what they need.

The argument to be made here, is not that all for-profit companies specifically benefit the disabled, abused, or the sick,(although some do) but that they benefit everyone. Including the above mentioned. Some companies that specifically target them are most notably, hospitals and pharmacies. Private sector hospitals will do whatever they can to get those people to buy their goods or services. So do other people which creates competition, which overall increases quality of service, and lowers cost. There are also private psychiatrists, counselors, doctors. There are companies that create wheelchairs and crutches and motor chairs that provide the disabled with mobility. The manufacturing of these supports steel and plastic industries directly, but support every other industry indirectly. The difference between the communism and capitalism is that communism taxes the whole country to provide a benefit for that single person, while capitalism lets that person choose not only if they want the benefit, but which benefits they want, and when they choose, they benefit not only themselves, but the whole country.

Almost PURE capitalism at its best.

As I have stated before, I do not endorse &quoture" or Laissez-faire capitalism. I believe in the minimal role of government to 1) uphold contracts between private parties, 2) address needs of society that cannot be achieved by the private sector.

Also, it's not even agreed upon that 19th century Britain even represents "laissez-faire". Living conditions were terrible at the time; I think much of this can be attributed to an unprecedented shift in how people were living - people were largely ignorant about some basic health concerns that got accentuated by urbanization. I think it's difficult to peg capitalism with so much blame when there were many sweeping changes going on. I'm more inclined to say, "Growing pains" and move on.

You have expressed the sentiment, however, that capitalism is concerned with practicality over ethical concerns. I think that you are correct, and I absolutely do think there are cases of capitalistic greed having ugly results. No system is perfect or even close to it.

There is evil in society and I am greatly concerned with minimizing it, same as you. But I don't see how things like centralizing control over the economy helps. Anyhow, I'm off to do more reading... as always your thoughts are very appreciated, I like someone who makes me reevaluate my position!

Can you explain to me how the "disabled with no ability to work and no family support" demographic is going to attract private health companies to compete for their business?

You're right, some hospitals and doctors do cater to the needs of these people. Profit definitely isn't one of their motivations in doing so.

As has been said many times, capitalism functions on the greedy/self-serving tendencies of people. So why do you think the free market can provide charity?

Under capitalism, who will help the sick, the poor, the weak, the injured, the hungry, or the children if they have no money?

Under capitalism, who will help the sick

No one, unless they have insurance, or if their illness qualifies as 'otentially life-threatening' in which the doctors will take care of the person while working out a way to pay for it.

the poor

No one can help the poor, but themselves. In most cases, excluding children and some adults with mental illness, it is no ones fault but their own they are poor.

the weak,

The strong were once weak.

the injured

See sick^^

the hungry

See sick.

or the children

Their parents should help them, and children don't have money anyways.

Ninja... something tells me you must lead a pretty comfortable life. The reality of suffering isn't so cut and dry I'm afraid. :/
