Okay. The best tips is to first target the areas that are farms or homes, or that can be made into farms or homes.

After you have a considerable amount of homes and farms, u'll then want to focus on scouting and then recruiting.
Recruiting is highly important. Not enough people and its hard to defend your fort.

After that, u'll want to have mostly soldiers with about 4 leaders to recruit, 10 builders, and 10 scientists so u can cure zombieism. Dont bother with the teachers and scavengers, They arent really useful.

Lastly, make sure that u keep the happiness and food supply up. I learned this the hard way. My people were starving, the happiness went down, and everyone was dying of starvation and leaving.

And to add to that survivors may revolt and withhold their labour for up to several days if happiness level is very low (i.e. near 0%-10%). Also when expanding outwards, reclaim most or all shopping malls and centres as a priority because they add a good bonus to the defence of your walls and you can then relieve more individuals from being positioned on guard duty.

I think these 3 things are the most important (in order):

Farms
Homes
Laboratory

I chose the laboratory because when you research how to kill zombies, the danger level when you go out to kill zombies is drastically reduced. Also, the lab can help you get more food and find survivors.

You're forgetting their size, there is a reason they provide a defense boost because they also connect with more squares, resulting in more zombies banging on the gates. On the higher difficulties this is really telling.

While it's true that once you've taken all the squares around them and fortified it, you have a good defensive bonus and can alieviate defenders, it's also true that if you leave a Mall on your outskirts, you'll quickly find yourself fighting more Z then you otherwise would of had to.

That's why I love this game, it's a lot more in-depth than first meets the eye. And god**** has 'anyone' finished Nightmare difficulty without cheating?

I finished Nightmare. It's really need heavy luck on random.
I got 7 defensive buildings (4 police+3 malls)in 2-3 squares around fort. Near day 20-30 i already had about 200 defense just for one man on duty.
Most important buildings on nightmare:
1.Hospital. Illness can strike almost every day. If you didn't have hospital in +2 range, you must remake.
2.Bar/church. at least 1. Party all the time, party all the time...
3.School. Without retraining you will fail.
4.Lab(without curing zeds spawned by 250 per day)
5.Defense
6.houses
7.farms.

Happiness and food are very essintal. Without food your happiness goes down the drain. I think you should always get a positive food supply and defenses, then work from there.

Whoever said scavengers are useless are very wrong. I found myself pulled from certain death by having a scavenger find a ton of food. They are also good scouts if your using all your soldiers for something else.

I say get at least 4 farms and some defensive structures then get hospitals and 1 school. Then you can work on getting whatever you want to do (cure zombisim, defeat the evil portal, etc....)

Final thing, convert things to shape your needs. Not enough food, then turns houses to farms and vice versa. All useless structers can be usefull if you convert them.
