I was watching something on National Geographic the other day and something about asexuals came up. I was a bit intrigued, but they did not go into as much detail as I wanted. I figured that sense we have a good group of discussioners (just made that word up), then we could all learn something.
What is Asexuality?
Wikipedia says: Asexuality describes individuals who do not experience sexual attraction and is considered by some to be a sexual orientation.[1] Asexuality as a human sexual orientation has only been recognized and defined in a few academic studies since the late 1970s, and a community of self-identified asexuals has only coalesced since the start of the 21st century, aided by the widening popularity of online communities.[1] One commonly cited study placed the incidence rate of asexuality at 1%.[2] Asexuality is not the same as celibacy, which is the deliberate abstention from sexual activity; many asexuals do have sex,[3] and most celibates are not asexual.
How does this fit into the Kinsey Sexuality Scale?
Alfred Kinsey was aware of an asexual element in the population but did little to investigate it. His Kinsey scale of sexual orientation consisted of a single axis lying between heterosexuality and homosexuality with bisexuality in between, and thus left no place for asexuality. In the Kinsey Reports of 1948 and 1953, subjects were scaled from 0 (completely heterosexual) to 6 (completely homosexual), but a separate category of X was created for those with "no socio-sexual contacts or reactions".[4][5] He labeled 1.5% of the adult male population as "X"
Questions
1. Is asexuality even real? I am skeptical. I don't see how one could be asexual given the hormones we all have.
2. Do you think it is purely sexual or does it involve romantic notions?
3. Given that it is real and does exist, could it be a result of a trauma?
4. Would you classify this as a mental disorder given the fact that their body has the right hormones, etc?
That symbol up there can be used as a heterosexuality symbol, but it can also be used as a general sex symbol. I remember back in 10th grade when these girls put those gender symbols in the right fashion and the teacher scolded them as they put the symbols as they were up there, because it was to symbolize sex. Which was apparently bad.
Well I have to admit that this whole thaing interests me. Sexuality and society is a complex web. I was once asked how do I "know" Im not gay. I said I just dont think I find men attractive but the minute I do Im sure I will know about it. Im guessing you feel kinda the same Avorne, as in, if you actually found something that attracts you, you would darn well know about it.
Also I rekon most peepz are real uncomfortable with the subject of sex and sexuality, or even lack of, as its a rather personal thing. Sometimes making fun of or attacking people is the only way others feel like they are not the thing they make fun of. Like people taking the piss outta gay people and hating them. Scared of being gay maybe? Maybe they think "If I make fun of this person for this or that then people wont suspect I too feel that way"...
And sometimes buddy, I feel a-frikkin-sexual.

i don't know what america your looking at, but im pretty sure that theres an old saying here, which is SEX SELLS. doesn't seem to b correlated with a negative inference to me.

This is sooooooo bad I need to re-quote it. Its a bad excuse to be offensive. I dont mind people who speak the truth of their mind. I am friends with people like this. But they have tact and feel strongly, they feel love for this world and understand their words have an effect.

I love it when people openly display their ignorance, then claim that every ideology they disagree with is somehow intellectually stunted. It's kind of like a sign that says "Don't talk to me, I'm too stupid to get what you are trying to say anyway." Saves me time and effort.
