We had a chat room feature a few years ago, and it was kind of a disaster. In principle, it's a great idea - but just figuring out how to make it work effectively has proven difficult. As Ghost mentioned, you can comment directly to other users via their profile (though there is no private message system). You can also look around the forums for some lively (and sometimes heated!) conversations.
