Quite right, pang - cheers for that. I was using 'welfare' as a broad term that is meant to capture anything of non-instrumental (or final) value - that is, things which are valuable for their own sake.
Money, of course, has only instrumental value relative to something else of final value, such as happiness (though this claim isn't completely uncontentious).
In short, if there's very little in my life with final value then I don't have very much welfare. This would also presumably include relationships, friendships, and family. When welfare, broadly construed, is only marginal it would seem we might have very little reason to not plug into an experience machine.

What if we didn't have a moon? a Sun? Or what is we did and they vanished?

That's not philosophy, that's science. We'd be dead. ._.

Thanks for the clarification, I was a bit confused when they mentioned that. This was the only usage i ever hear but now i know the way they mean words to be.

What if we didn't have a moon? a Sun? Or what is we did and they vanished?

The meaning of philosophy is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline.

a theory or attitude that acts as a guiding principle for behavior..

Well, if we didn't need the sunlight it'd be philosophy. As is, humanity cannot exist without the sun. Pretty certain everything would be screwed up. I understand your point, though. Philosophy is discussing how we'd think if the sun wasn't there. Science is knowing that we wouldn't be here if the sun wasn't there.

Ok i wanted to start light and use questions with answer that can be worked out logically. Now on to more questions that we have either our own answers or we can't say for certain what the answers are.

The first questions are ones i have seen from inside the actors studios.

i asked to pick at-least 3 of these but i will pick 5

1.What is your favorite word?
2.What is your least favorite word?
3.What sound do you love?
4.What sound do you hate?
5.What profession would you not like to do?

1. Mine is egregious.
2. Shall,
3. From the top of my head would be a waterfall.
4. Children screaming :/
5. Anything that is repetitive and dosen't challenge me. Working in a shop.

Other questions. I Have heard of thought of.

What are immoral deeds?
Is there more happiness or sadness in the world?
Is time Endless?
Is man by nature good or evil?
Can we have good thing without bad things?
What happens when we die? Is there life after death?
Is there such a thing as nothing? or is what we call nothing (i.e whats is most of space made of) actually something?
What determines the fate of each individual?
What is the place of man in the universe?
What is the nature of the universe?
What is the ultimate fate of the universe?

Take time to truly think about these.

Would you go into this machine?

this was a long way of asking "are you happy with your life?"

Now having a life with everything you always wanted may sound good but it seems we need the bad things aswell to really appreciate the good or not bad things we have.

there are a lot of people that seem to have this "normal life" but are actually very lonely and bad news is hitting them all the time. there is no reason for these people to not go in. you need the bad to appreciate the good. but you need the good to see any sense in life at all.
By being let's say "low" on the money making. Money is not everything. It is generally those who have less in terms of monetary value who can appreciate family. Since your are not working you can spend alot of time with them.

the thing with money is that money does indeed not make happy. but it does make you unhappy if you dont have enough. when being in debt and every penny you earn go's straight to other people, then it is very hard to find happiness in activities for example. money gives you freedom to get and do those things you like.
and not everyone has such a great family to spend time with. you can't choose your family, there are more long time fights and w/e going on in families then your friends. and many people in this world do not have friends.
i draw a very empty life here i know, but it actually is not uncommon. but you will barely ever see it on people in public. it seems people are afraid to show loneliness cause it's such a taboo. not because it's bad, but because it's a hard topic to talk about.
(there has been research done on this question and it seemed that up to 200.000 euro a year people got more and more happy. after they earned more then that. they became less happy because they went thinking that friends are just there for the money and such.)

The meaning of philosophy is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline.

this forum is mostly debating not philosophizing...
in debates people try to get the best reasons over a other.
in philosophy people try to find the understanding and reasoning of other peoples thoughts. free of any own interpretation.

What is your favorite word?

"why"
as a child we keep asking why verbally. but we will never stop asking why when we grow up in our head.

What is your least favorite word?

"noob"
only noobs use this word. anyone with a normal vocabulary that doesn't come from playing games all the time wont use it.

What sound do you love?

tenor saxophone

What sound do you hate?

babies crying.

What profession would you not like to do?

Anything that is repetitive and dosen't challenge me.

What are immoral deeds?

deeds that are morally not accepted. what those morals are depends on the culture and mindset of the people involved.

Is there more happiness or sadness in the world?

there is no real answer to this. we could only tell by measuring now with a time befor. i would say there is more happiness now then there was in WW2. but there is more sadness then there was befor the money crisis thingy.

Is time Endless?
can i repeat that question with a other question...
does time exist? or is it just a "measuring system" like meters and gallons. that we use?

Is man by nature good or evil?

man as in humanity? in that cause neither. we can care for 1 and wish hell upon a other at the same time.
as for individuals, it's also not a clear yes or no. but i bet there are genes that has something to do with how people make their choices in life. and i can imagion that a different pattern of choices made, can cause for people to become more or less hateful.

Can we have good thing without bad things?

it would be num. we would take all the good things for granted. so we can't actually be happy with the good. and we can't feel bad cause there is nothing bad. i for one would love to get this feeling once. it would be a new feeling that can open thoughts of who i actually am. without all the good and bad interruptions of life.

What happens when we die?

we rot away. we become compost for nature. the elements that we're made of will become part of something else.
Is there life after death?

no. our brain doesn't get the oxygen to function. we will have no more consciousness forever.

Is there such a thing as nothing?

in numbers: yes and no. nothing = zero = the measurement between a positive and a negative. but a negative is not always possible. in that case yes.
in space: i believe nothing is something. and real nothing can be found in the middle of a black hole.

What determines the fate of each individual?

the circumstances you grow up in. your own choices, your own interests, your charisma, your looks and 25% your luck.

What is the place of man in the universe?

the habitable zone + a bit more of our solar system.
in the entire universe we dont play a role.

What is the nature of the universe?

what do you mean to ask here? =S

What is the ultimate fate of the universe?

many theories. pick one =P

In a way, sort of. The way i worded it like this was because there is more thinking upon this. The idea was for you to come up with the question in the end.

I disagree. most of these questions are not right or wrong? I would like to ask what is your thought on coming to this conclusion? Let's use Science as an example most of the logic and theories behind this had to be debated but people coming up with different theories to discuss the proper answer. Imagination and thinking of these things had to be done for the logic and physics of them to be later applied.

What is the nature of the universe?

what do you mean to ask here? =S

Interpret questions as you think what they mean. As i said their is no right or wrong answers in most of these. I am interested in the way of thinking by others.

Well... this has stopped being philosophy. So, yeah, I'm out.

In what way? what makes you come to this conclusion? What is your meaning of philosophy? What is the direction you wish to go in?
