I don't live in Detroit but I am about a half hour from it. Anyways, Detroit just put in something that really makes me angry.
Every single kid that graduates from Detroit gets a free ride to basically any college they want. By free ride, I mean they don't have to pay any tuition. They don't even have to get good grades, they just have to pass.
I am not sure what makes Detroit so special. I know there is a money problem but hello, most of Michigan is having problems. I think it is completely unfair. I mean kids like myself who bust their butts to maintain a great GPA will barely get any scholarships and someone who got a D average will easily get in the same college. What is up with that?
I do wonder if it is because Detroit is African American mainly. I am not trying to be racist but what other reason is there? African Americans have complained that they are being turned down from colleges because of their color. I personally think some colleges do that but there are still many colleges that don't do background checks and make it fair.
So, a couple of questions...
1) Does this make you as mad as me? 2) What do you think is the reason for this? 3) Should colleges do background checks?
I have a 3.0 GPA, and I am usually a good student. I find that this policy is the exact reason why so many cities/states/ USA in general is in huge debt. We sponsor too many charities and we don't put enough money into the US budget. The real problem is the charities sponsor people who are lazy and don't even care to find jobs. They feed off of the taxpayers like leaches, and look where America stands now.

Well. I don't know the reason towards this. I wish every kid could got to college for free. And background checks? What background checks? Criminal or scholastic achievement checks?
I think that we should have a type of apprenticeship, like Germany has. I am either going to be a translator or an auto mechanic, and for either of those, I don't need biology or chemistry, and I don't need 90% of the things I learned in math, so it becomes unnedded information that just gets stuck in there and take a little of my life away.
So you are angry for others' fortune? I'd be happy that people in a bad situation as stated would get a free ride to college. Now this is a bit sketchy. I bet there are many conditions for this, "free ride."
Now ask yourself, does this ultimately affect you? Does this lessen your chance to go to college? Also think, these free rides may just be for small colleges. I'd bet you money that the scholarships aren't for big schools. Nothing like Michigan, or other big 1-A schools.
Good for people going out of Detroit. They get a college education, if they choose so. If they don't, they're wasting a great opportunity that many would love to use.
well good for them.but still they could just probably get the money..wait there getting money to pay for it?well if that they would use it for other things to..i know NOOONE would have alot of money and spend it all on college..i would stop partial city hunger with me money.
NS? That's the biggest load of bull I've ever seen. I work to graduate, get through high school on the Distinguished plan in Texas, go to a smaller school (Texas Tech's music department wouldn't answer my e-mails).... then I find out kids who barely squeak through would have the opportunity to get more than what I work for? This is wrong. Also, a huge number of those kids won't do well in college, but if it's free, what the hell? A lot of them will go. So the government is, in a way, setting them up to fail in college, setting a potential precedent for the rest of their life. This is just as wrong as the welfare system - those who can work but don't shouldn't be given access to money to put them on level with those who DO work.

No, I'm not angry for their fortune. I'm angry that I could have a WAY better GPA then them, but STILL get less of a scholarship then they. Do you think this is right? I don't think so.
Yeah. I don't think it's right that in med school, someone could apply and have top marks on the MCAT, and excel at everything else they've done, but someone from a minority group would get in ahead of them because they're a minority.

Well some people still believe in a crazy thing known as helping the poor and needy, but some more wealthy people might not know of such a term.
