I don't live in Detroit but I am about a half hour from it. Anyways, Detroit just put in something that really makes me angry.

Every single kid that graduates from Detroit gets a free ride to basically any college they want. By free ride, I mean they don't have to pay any tuition. They don't even have to get good grades, they just have to pass.

I am not sure what makes Detroit so special. I know there is a money problem but hello, most of Michigan is having problems. I think it is completely unfair. I mean kids like myself who bust their butts to maintain a great GPA will barely get any scholarships and someone who got a D average will easily get in the same college. What is up with that?

I do wonder if it is because Detroit is African American mainly. I am not trying to be racist but what other reason is there? African Americans have complained that they are being turned down from colleges because of their color. I personally think some colleges do that but there are still many colleges that don't do background checks and make it fair.

So, a couple of questions...

1) Does this make you as mad as me?
2) What do you think is the reason for this?
3) Should colleges do background checks?

Let me say this again. The scholarship are probably NOT FOR 1-A SCHOOLS. There is no way big/great schools would give away free rides to students like that. These free rides are probably for community colleges, or tiny 3-A schools.

So you are angry for others' fortune? I'd be happy that people in a bad situation as stated would get a free ride to college. Now this is a bit sketchy. I bet there are many conditions for this, "free ride."

Now ask yourself, does this ultimately affect you? Does this lessen your chance to go to college? Also think, these free rides may just be for small colleges. I'd bet you money that the scholarships aren't for big schools. Nothing like Michigan, or other big 1-A schools.

I am angry at the fact that Detroit gets special treatment while many other schools are still suffering. They just need to graduate high school and they get free tuition.

It actually does lessen my chance. The colleges will need to raise tuitions for students everywhere else to make up for Detroit. That will be much harder to pay off. The free tuition is for any college that will accept the student. If a Detroit student was accepted to U of M, his tuition would be free. I think it is completely unfair since the rest of the students in Michigan will have to pay more when there are many cities actually worse then Detroit.

I know this is double posting but it needs to be said...

How about you read up on it instead of assume? I find it ridiculous how you are arguing with absolutely no real information. Let me say this again. The students get a free ride to any college that will accept them whether it be community or U of M.

That will accept them

You just finished yourself there. No major 1-A college will accept anyone that just barely passes highschool. Detroit can't just issue free rides unless every college gives consent. I don't need proof for that, it is just common sense. I would like for you to give me a document stating these free rides. The only possibility I see this is if the college is in-state. Ask yourself this.

And I'd like YOU to find ME some real info.

I think this is a bad idea for many of the reasons that have been stated. Although i have heard of other things which annoy me. Army scholarships for one. I can see why they do it as an incentive for people to join up, but i still dont like the fact that people who are less qualified in their grades would get in where some dont. I took an RAF scholarship as a flying instructor to go to a 6th form college but i got all As and A stars at my GCSE exams which is the best you can do so i earned my place. People getting in for no good reason seems highly unfair.

I found a video regarding the news, or something similar. "The Detroit Promise"?

The Detroit Promise

Anywho, by the looks of it, it seems it isn't necessarily "a free ride" like you said. In fact, they would have to raise money and gain pledges from citizens and corporations. Along with that, the kids who pass highschool would need good grades to get into these A-1 colleges...
