It's a nice idea, but it would be absolutely impossible to teach someone German through typing alone. How would they learn pronunciation? I do enjoy talking to a few members on the site that are German - it helps with a lot with my grammar.
I think it would be a good idea to network people together, though. The more German that I use, the less rusty I get.

Guten abend translates to Good evening.

My parents, are from both sides of the border.
Dad's culture is slavic.( Dzien Dobry )= Good Morning in Polish
Mum's ancestry is goth. ( Guten Morgen )= Good Morning in Deutsch

You are correct about pronunciation.
How would they learn the sounds.

I have noticed this, with the australians and americans.
Quite interesting, hearing the ' Lowenbrau ' pronunciation.
Yankees seem to, drag the pronunciation of 'Lowen ' and 'Brau '.

Also the american accent, of spoken german is very noticable.
The aussies use a different pronunciation.
For the australians, this is basically what it sounds like:

" LOW " " WHEN " " BROW ".
