Keep this debate clean. I have a few questions about god and Jesus. Now i am a christian and i believe but it's not about me. Well when people go oh Jesus and god is a bunch of bull-hunky, and yet when they have a gun pointed to their head they go oh Jesus oh god please help me, i don't get that. And another thing is how people can sit there and not believe in anything. To me believing as some say is being afraid of dying, but I am not really. I think believing gives hope to whats really out there and to sit there being really dark and not believing in anything is just not human, to me at least. So my big question even to me, is god or Jesus real, or anything we seem to think is real...real?
Any way, I still really haven't got the answer to my question. If people don't believe in god then why do they go oh god save me when at gunpoint, I don't care about the excuses oh it is just an instinct. If you don't believe then why ask him for help? Anyone understand my point just a little bit?
I don't think people who don't believe in god ask god for help when they're in trouble. sometimes they say god damnit, but that's more of a sacrilegious thing.
If people don't believe in god then why do they go oh god save me when at gunpoint,
I was actually robbed at gunpoint. I in no way asked god for help. Ask any veteran who is also an atheist and they will tell you that the old adage "there are no atheists in foxholes" is utter bullcrap.
In other news, I love how atheists have been blatantly attacked in this thread. Atheism is such a failed concept... but that's a discussion for another thread.
The reason people do that? They're not actually crying out to God. They're simply saying what is always said in that situation. That is all.
Yes those cries do not necessarily mean any result is expected. It could sometimes be just a cultural way of expressing grief, need, fear, desperation, etc.
I am being raised as a Christian but none of it makes sense to me and I'm a logical thinker so I think I'm dropping this religion stuff.
I think religion was created to give the early humans something to live for. I mean all you do is live and die for what? to be buried in the ground or burned in a furnace? I also think that religion was created to give people hope, and a safe place to go to where they won't be judged. BUT "Belivers" say it's faith, yeah... I don't have faith in things I can't see or hear. It makes those people sound like they have a mental disease... I hear god, there he is <3 I'm not trying to be an ass but I just don't believe in things I can't see.
Not for the oh god stuff when your near death. Personally why be afraid of death your going to die one way or another. NO ONE is invincible. I think if someone would put a gun to my head I would probably yell " Pull the trigger! do it!" or something like that because people with gun don't have the guts to pull the trigger. Seriously, unless they have killed someone before they don't really want to kill someone.
You know, people do usually say "Oh my god" That wouldn't necessarily mean that they are refering to the Christian God. Perhaps an atheists god would be a Wii or something... i dunno, but when people say "Oh my God", they arent being specific...
