I didn't find it but I'll shoot for article of the week. The best weapon is the human mind. We most people on earth don't even use 10% of their brain. I theorize that people can use a type of persuasion that would be somewhat of a mind control! Sci-fi-ish I know, but so was 20k leagues under the sea! Aside from the human mind being one of the most powerful weapons, the SPAS-12 shotgun is one of my personal favorite guns. It is just a great shotgun, what else can I say? Decent enough for an article of the week? =P
It's the Romans. The only reason the Gauls manages to beat them at all, was they were falling apart anyway. The only redeeming quality of Spains military was their short-lived navy. Britain and the US over take them in naval power pretty quickly. My second choice is the Greeks, with the Spartans and their innovative use of siege engines.
I agree with quakingphear. In terms of military innovation and discipline, the Romans win the spot. The Egyptians were severely hampered by their lack of wood, the Spaniards in early times were only skilled at making swords, and the Gauls were heavily disorganized. The Greeks were an interesting case, but they never perfected the use of hardened iron, using softer bronze instead. They were not well organized as well, with the different city-states and the disunion in the aftermath of the Peloponnesian War.
Greece had many city states, and allthough this may sound cheesy, but Sparta was the best in war (THIS IS SPARTAAAAAAAA), and I'm not just saying that cuz I know of 300, I personally think it's a big load. Of the 4 city-states I know of in Greece, Sparta was the best in war for a couple of reasons. The main reason that I actually remember is this: Sparta had taken children from an early age (8-15 I think, been a while since 6th grade =P), and make them serve in the barracks for a while. Each Spartan had low rations, and were meant to be tempted to steal from others. They had to do so in secret, this built something the Spartans admired, but I think that it's just a bunch of the bigger muscle bound Schwarzeneggers (NUAHAHA!) stealing a "comrades" food. Either way, each male citizen had military capabilites, so I reason that they would be the best. HOO-RAH
