I don't know, I'm fairly sure that they haven't explained yet, but there are some good theories;
Blackbead has a body strong enough for the devils in the devil fruit to fight without killing him.
His power allowed him to enter Whitebeards' body, and steal it, hence the need for darkness.
(Weird one): He has a d in his name, for devil, allowing him to controll more than one fruit.

Granted, but as I'm sure you are aware, you would die from the effects, so...

I think it is because the Yami Yami no mi allowing Blackbeard's blood to absorb anything he wants, including devil fruit laced blood, but that is just my idea. As for the D, I am willing to become Natey D. Jamie Shawshank if that is what it takes. Ope Ope no mi. Who's to say that none of the current D. people have not added the D themselves?? That is not my REAL name btw, but close.

Granted, Ace was zapped and stunned by Aokiji, thus unable to take the death blow and Luffy dies. After Ace wakes up on a ship with Jinbe, he heads to Sabaody and becomes the new captain of the Straw Hat pirates. He wins the Gomu Gomu no mi in the Corrida Colosseum and gives it to Sabo, who joins the crew as #10.

Granted, but it was a knock-off and the episodes themselves are low quality with horrible English dubbing by a bunch of wannabe voice actors.
