I think that there should be a double period in science rather than grammar. Sure, grammar is a very important skill, but I think that science is more important than grammar. It's just that science isn't being learned enough/as much. I'm really tired now *keels over and dies*
Well, it might just be at your school that you have two periods of English instead of one.
But, I do think that schools in the United States should focus on more math and science. We're falling behind compared to other countries. Less interest in math and science, as well as less-advanced classes, means that jobs will be lost in the future because we will have to import more foreign scientists for research jobs.
I haven't seen anyone learn grammar anyway. English class is all about writing bunch of essays of which contain no educational importance. They are nothing but the result of working them fingers to the bone to achiever complete nothingness...other then an 'A' which apparently the determine of ones intelligence, which I would argue is nothing but revealing of the gold oriented. That of which actually believe it to be natural as rain and those who realize it and just put up with the system.
Now as of science specifically, meh...would be great to have a population that knows a bit more. However, I support the free choice of students to go along the path of their interests, instead of forcing science on everyone.
in my school, nobody really likes english, and as drace said, all we do is write pointless essays. On the other hand, people in my class really like science because we have a great teacher this year :P
I think all classes need time. And I do agree that some subjects are more important. However, I don't think that any subject really deserves a double-block (two classes is one day of the same subject). And if they make the science period longer, that would just screw everyone's schedule up.
well, double periods are good, but i think that they should be at different times of the day.
and here's a slightly stupid idea: what if say there was a 8-day school schedule. what if all the science periods were one day, all the math the next...etc and then all the less used periods could be fit into the last 5-2 days?
Blech... could you imagine having science, or social studies all day? I get fed up enough with 79 minutes of socials, but 5 hours? Now that is something I don't want to touch. At all.

Thats what its like in summer school :-$
I was thinking maybe...each subject for say...3 months. Through January to end of March would be science, along side with some electives. The next season we focus on math...
It would be quite a way to get the kids attentions.
Of course the classes would have to be interactive, not listening to the teacher for hours.
The problem I see with the education system is the stupid "No Child Left Behind" deal. Standardized testing means that higher standards are set for graduation. This should be a good thing. WRONG. We want our kids to graduate, so we give them tests that give them the lowest standards needed to succeed in life.
Normally this wouldn't be a problem. However, when the school does not receive funding when a certain amount of students don't pass the test, then the principal suggests that the test be taught at the school, instead of the curriculum. Thus, time is spent on learning how to pass the test, rather than other material.
This can explain why there is more emphasis on English than Science classes: passing the English standardized test is required; there is no Science test that requires passing to graduate.
