I've been on a lot of people's profiles and a lot seem not to know what a SteamID is. My profile says ?????????? but that is just because I don't have a SteamID.

But to reply to the question: because kids these days are too lazy to use Google or any other search engine. Seriously. A million "stupid" questions could be avoided if people took the time to look for the answer on their own, or ask someone they know would know it directly...

It is not even hard to find something like that on google... I think my Information Architecture teacher is right. Many do not even know how to search for information nowadays. That is why we need Information Scientists... Or Librarians in common layman.
