The Moderation Team

Questions can normally be answered through the Help page, so if you have a general site question, please make sure to look there first.

The Moderators on Armor Games make sure that users are following the Rules and Regulations, and help enforce these rules. You may see them around the site, answering users questions and taking care of SPAM. Moderator comments show up in blue in the forums, so it is easier to tell when a moderator is responding on a topic. All site moderators and administrators can be viewed on the About page.

Without further ado, here is a list of the most current Moderators:

Want to be a Moderator? Want Merits?

Then DON'T ASK!

We love that you love Armor Games enough to try to become a moderator or that you want extra points for writing a great review but we will not make you a moderator or give you a merit if you ask.

Why?

Because we choose our moderators by selecting members of the community who are responsible, mature, and contribute in great ways to the site. We watch in our own eyes and suggest to each other who should become the next mod. If you say to us "hey, I want to be a mod!" you are hurting this process because we want to choose based on qualities of users we need... leadership, responsibility, maturity, respect, and dedication to make the site awesome. Saying "I should be mod!" makes us think twice... mod material comes from people who SHOW US they can be a mod, not ASK US.

So don't:
Ask a mod to make you a moderator on the site.
Ask an admin to make you a moderator on the site.
Suggest a user to become a moderator on the site.

As for merits, we don't want you shoving your merits in our faces. We have quite a few people scouring the site looking for awesome comments to merit so if you wrote something good most likely it will be found. If it isn't found, that isn't to say you didn't do something great for the site. People who write lots of good comments end up becoming mods as well, so maybe you won't get the merit but you might get something even better!

So help the site by being good Armor Games users, but let us choose the next mods and merits on our own accord.

Thanks!

(Thanks to John for this section)

Merit Standards

We have been getting a lot of complaints lately about people not getting merits for their comments. This is not necessarily because we have not seen them, but because we have heightened our standards of what constitutes a merit worthy comment. We have put our standards into some guidelines, so that you guys can see what we look for in a merit:

1) Perfect or near perfect grammar. Remember to use capitalization and proper spelling.
2) Structured - try to give some flow and structure to what you are writing. Don't just around from topic to topic.
3) Comprehensive, and with unique insight into the game that we somehow deem to be valuable.
4) Coherent. A lot of reviews that follow the recommended template become an exercise unto itself i.e. they don't really make sense when you actually read them. They sometimes even contradict themselves. These sort of comments don't get merits. Just because it is long, does not mean it will get a merit. It has to make sense too.
5) Contains constructive criticism of the game. Tell us the changes that you would make to the game, and why. What do you approve of? What don't you like?
6) Do not ask for a merit. Chances are, if you have to ask for a merit, you will not get one. It highly reduces your chances of receiving one, and makes us sad every time you ask

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
For further hints and tips, check out the N&N and Greg Merit Guide. But remember to always follow the guidelines listed above.

Moderator Standards

"If you would like to become a moderator, you first need to show that you are responsible on the site; show a good posting record and maturity and you may be granted these exclusive rights! We will usually hand pick moderators, but if you feel you have what it take, contact us on the Contact page... we are really, really picky though!" -Courtesy of the Help page.

Now here are some of this things we look for in moderators:

1) Responsibility. Potential moderators must be responsible, mature, honest, and trustworthy. There is not a specific age requirement, but maturity is a big aspect of moderation. This is why we do tend to choose members who are older.
2) Good posting record. We look for members who have a good posting record. This means they have an adequate amount of forum posts, game reviews, and merits. We look for people who post clearly and intelligently with very few spelling or grammatical errors. We will never choose someone who spams any of their writing for points. We look for people who post comments to help improve the site, instead of just posting for points.
3) Helpful. Potential moderators are members who are very helpful and courteous to other members of the community. They answer questions for other members when possible with a friendly attitude. They are active and constructive with suggestions and support. Moderators have a genuine interest in helping improve the community.
4) Activity. We only ask members who are moderately to very active on the site. This helps us ensure that they will be accessible to members of the community, and be around to help enforce the rules of the site.

If you would like to be a moderator, please do not ask a moderator or administrator directly. Chances are, if you have to ask to be a moderator, you probably should not be one. We normally hand pick moderators, and none of the moderators that we currently have were chosen because they asked for it. We don't really go by the 'Ask and you shall receive policy.'

At first, just like you said, the "enlarging text" thing is a bit unnecessary. If you want the voted comment to stand out, you should add a "sort by votes" feature on the comments, alongside with the default "sort by date" (in that way they will see and vote for most recent comments too)

Very good idea LaXe, I agree with you completely.

And most important, you should remove the merit feature and reduce the comment reward of 2 AG to 1 AG and the users will be rewarded an extra 1 AG point for every vote. Simple, and affective.
That's because if the reward by writing a good review is so accessible and direct, almost all of the players will attempt to write, if not a long review, something that makes sense, instead of the one-word spam comments!

*screams* NO! Thats basicly the main source of AG Points on this site, rating and commenting on games. I think the 2 AG point per rating and comment is just fine :]

And the 1 AG standar comment reward is very important too, because it's small and the player will want to earn something more, but at the some time he/she won't be disappointed if the comment doesn't get voted!

*screams again* Uh huh, sure, thats gonna work. =/

Ok, I think this is mostly a detail. I don't think there's a big difference between 1 or 2 points per comment, but it's still ok if it stays the way it is.

The real change I suggest, is giving 1 AG point for each vote a comment gets, replacing the whole merit thing.

What's your view on that?

People will get friends to vote their comments up for points, or create a gazillion extra accounts to vote up their own.

And that is why it most likely won't happen.

I have thought about that and I think it's not something that can't be solved.

At first, if you have to give away an e-mail address for each account, I don't think is possible to create gazillion extra accounts. Maybe 2-3, the worst case scenario.

As for the "voting friends" problem, it can be dealt with by putting limit of, let's say, 25 AG = 25 votes for each comment, or even less. At the same time you should to add a "report vote abuse" feature next to the comment, so if someone's comment is something like "boring" or "0/10" and still has a lot of votes, he/she will be reported and easily banned with points removal or something like that.

But if you think about it afterall, is it possible to have a bunch of friends to vote for you for every comment you make? This is not so easy, the chances are limited, because it needs real coordination. They must a cartel, or a voting mafia! But, in case this happens, he/she can be easily reported, because it's something obvious for the other users.

I'd like to add something too. I assume you are going to ask me "but if the comment made by someone who has his friends voting him, is not so obviously spam, then we won't be able to decide whether or not to ban him/her, so it's most likely that he will get to keep his points and nothing works. Not to mention that he will get the same points with someone who has made a great review".

That's right, I think a good solution for that would be:

a) Forget about the voting limit of 25 AG that I mention in my first comment

b) Add a "down arrow" as well, in other words, let the users decide directly if the comment deserves its votes or not.

Overall, I suggest this pointing system:

1) 2 AG standar for each comment

2) 2 or 3 AG for each positive vote*

3)-1 AG for each negative vote:

BUT the voting count will stop at zero votes, in that way the user will only lose the some of the extra points he got from votes not the standar 2 AG comment point or more.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
*Now, I suggest 2 or 3 for each positive vote to be more difficult to lose points than to gain. And in case we have a voting "mob war" or someone "attacks" to someones comments on purpose to gain rank, until the time the "attacker" is reported and banned, the "victim" will not be so severly damaged.
Plus, the fact that one "attacker" won't be capable of seriously "harming" the "victim"'s points, is a way to prevent him from doing it, too. -1 point per comment is nothing really, especially for someone high in rank where the "competition" is most likely to turn "violent".. Not neglecting that the points of the high ranking users will be even more then the users of the current high ranks, because of the 2 or 3 AG per comment system I mentioned before.

will be even more *then* the users of the current high ranks, because of the 2 or 3 AG per comment system I mentioned before.

typo: then=than

Don't forget that all this is about the EXTRA points from votes. Nobody will be able to actually stop someone else from gaining points. Someone doing this on purpose by targeting another user? This is really a worst case scenarion, very unlikely to happen.

Disposable email accounts. You can make hundreds, thousands if you really want to.

But that aside...
Your idea is complex. It would take quite a lot of coding, and probably only make people more AP hungry.
I still prefer the idea of getting rid of AP all together.

Also, currently it's some pretty simple counters that keeps track of how many AP someone have. This would mean changing the basic way the system works.

You have some reasonable well thought through ideas, but...
Why? Why would it be better than, say, remove the AP from the site?

Ok, I agree that my idea might be too complex to accomplish, even though some other gaming sites have a much more complex voting-point system..

However, I don't agree with the total removal of the AP, because it still can make some things better on the site, without encouraging spam.

Instead, I would recommend some much more simple changes which, I believe, will make the pointing system a bit better.

1) Remove the 2 AP points from the comments. This way the users will make a comment when they really want to say something.

2) Maybe, make two tabs; one for comments and one for people who want to make a review on the game. No "AP hunger" thus better reviews without the need of checking if it's good or not. Possibly you can add a "vote" option here, but, WITHOUT giving away AP for this. Just for the best to stand out, helping the players and the developer.

3) Keep the AP reward for rating! This is very important to make sure all people will rate the game, thus having a much more realistic view of the players' opinion on the game.

4) You can either get rid of the merits (that's what I would suggest) or keep the merits but with some changes. Of course, your work will be much easier if you add the 2 tabs and voting-reviews feature. So, you will be able to give out merits in predefined period of time. That's very important. People will be encouraged to write good reviews if they know that at the end of the week or month, they will get the APs from all the meritted comments they made at this period. Or just lose them completely.

5) You can add a simple reward of, let's say, 25 AP, every time they complete a game. No complex budging system. Just for reaching the "The End. Replay?" screen!

But don't EVER lose the AP completely. It gives a feeling of accomplishment and binding with the site and without them there's no point having an AG profile..

Okay, I just want to know, how do comments get noticed for merits? Merit Recognition isn't around anymore and you can't fave a comment other players made. If any moderator has information on Merits, please post a comment on my account page.

Mods check the comments on games. and the good reviews stand out on their own.

Perhaps I should clarify. You see that flag on the right of all comments? I for one, tend to use that whenever I see a one worded comment that is clearly being used for points. All I want to know is how can other players attract mods to exceptionally good reviews thet merit, a well merit, the same way they can attract mods to execptionally bad reviews by flagging them.

You cant. Good reviews stood out on their own, so the "Vote Up" option was pointless, and taken off the site.

I have to say there is a problem with that idea then! Call me one wishing for the "Good 'Ol Days" but I think it's impossible for Mods to accuratly sift throught all the comments that are posted everyday. I also question the idea that "good reviews stood out on their own" if by stand out, you mean that they are just longer, I can agree. But to clearly judge a review to see if it deserves a merit or not you need to completly read on it and cannot depend for it to "stand out". Simply what I'm trying to say is: Who better to decide if a comment is good or not then the people who are actually reading them?

The mods "actually read them." In case you forgot, mods are members who were the most contributing, and know the rules the best. They are given the power to give merits because they are the most qualified. So I think they are perfectly capable of deciding what is worthy of a merit and what is not.
