A friend of mine brought this up, as it is a debate going on right now in the worlds of science and math. Basically, the argument is that a decimal fallowed by an infinite number of nines is actually equal to One.

The argument is simple in that:

1/3 = 0.333...
1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 3/3 = 1
0.333... + 0.333... + 0.333... = 0.999...
1 = .999...

But this is all well and good for the world of Math. But science has proven a different logic, were they are not equal. My favorite example is that in science, one plus one is approximately two, due to the impurities of one. This expression basically is stating that having two halves put back together does not make it whole again.

So in my argument, I argue that if 0.999... is equal to 1, then 1 is equal to 2. I shall demonstrate using the same logic. I shall refer to an infinite amount of numbers using "..."

1 - 0.999... = 0.000...001
1 + 0.000...0001 = 1.00...001

Step 1: 0.999 = 1.000...001

0 + 0 = 0
0.000...001 + 0.000...001 = 0.000...002

Step 2: 0.000...001 + 0.000...001 = 0.000...002

2 / 1 = 2
0.000...002 / 0.000.001 = 2

Step 3: 1 = 2

Ahh! What can possibly be more interesting then math?

a) Maybe math can be classified as philosophy. It started as some form of it.

Well I definitely think 0.999999999... is = to 1 this is because look!

If 1/3=0.3333 (rounded up) it is still what it is. No Change at all! Then you multiply that by 3 which give you 1

1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1

But then 0.3333 X 3 = 0.9999
Now if you look at it, the 0.333's are rounded up! So if you also round up the answer itself which is 0.9999 it would = to 1!

You see 0.999999... rounded up. From any number after the decimal point will always equal to a 1.

But thats by opinion!

wow DDX, u r so clever (How can u say the general population of AG is 14?) U must be a sorcerer, lol.

Our brain limitation (or perhaps we don't know how to use it 100%), scientists says, even Einstein only using 15% of his brain, - it's like to measure tsunami with ruler (Morningstar game)

I believe in some ways we evolve into the next level, but devolve in some ways.

Uh telling by how many people chose to use algebra than calculus must mean that kids are under 16. And most of them are around 12-14 So I said that the general population is 14.

I was in my class, when my teacher ask a 3784 X 2563 =... and suddenly i answer his question before everyone touch the calculator (everyone stare at me), but i don't understand myself how can i count that fast.

Yea... thats simple multiplication, if you can't do that fast enough then really, why are you in math class? Calculus is a long process, not some bull crap that you fling around in algebra II.

Steven Hawkings uses 43% of his brain and hes paralyzed neck down, from a muscle disease.

calculator is a machine, it reveals what human says to reveals, it doesn't calculate.

again, a calculator processes
http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/~paulmay/misc/1s/jan2004b.gif
much faster than humans do, because it runs over 300 parallel calculations in a few seconds. (I'm talking about the TI-89's used in calc 3 classes). Humans program the calculators what they have to do...

I really dont understand this! How can you say its simple? Its pretty difficult to calculate this within that short length of time!??

I have thought about this quite often... they're irrational numbers so it's fitting that they have irrational qualities...

they're not irrational numbers, irrational numbers can't be written as a fraction with integer values (like root 2 or pi).
0.333... is 1/3. 0.999... is 9/9 or 1

@Bugsy77
There is no rounding involved in determining that 0.999... = 1. It's just the fact that the gap between 0.999... and 1 is infinitely small and is therefore the same.

There is a very good proof that has already been posted which require no rounding.

let x = 0.999....
10x = 9.999...
10x-x=9
9x=9
x=9/9=1

I wish some people would see maths as clearly as I do, there is no magic trick or flaw in maths in this sense, just people get confused by the numbers
