Yes a topic on grammar?

Do you feel that grammar is important online? or not important?
I feel grammar is especially important in forums its annoying reading posts(dat luk liek dis). Though I am not downing anyone if they make a mistake everyone once in a while but deliberately messing up isn't fun.

Discussion points:
1. Is grammar important online?
2. Do you strive for proper grammar on IMs, forums, online games, etc...?
3. Does it annoying you when someone else using text speak or something? or do you just deal with it?

1) Yes.
2) Yes.
3) Yes.

Seriously, how do people function without proper grammar? Without it you don't know if someone is being serious or sarcastic, informative or ignorant.

I don't mind the abbreviation, or even the occasional misspellings. But what I hate most is the following:

(When people use) :: (Instead of)

there :: their
ax :: ask
are :: our

There's also your and you're and its and it's.

I remember a time when I thought it was cool to talk in l33t speak and AIMchat. I did it for maybe a year. Often it's a phase, for which I am much reassured.

Bottom line is that communication requires structure, and in a meta-sense, constant commentary on said structure.

I try to make grammatical correct posts, as well as spelling correctly, but English in not my first language, so sometimes it slips. Keyboard mistakes are also done once in a while, especially because I do not rear the post before posting it.
But I find that being at least semi litterate is important for forums. Chatpages, well, whatever poeple like there, but with forums it is important to be understandable.
I get annoyed at my mother sometimes, because her text messages end up like this:

did you call your father You know twas his birthday yester day

Yes... Or people writting "Whats up" on my wall. I tend to answer them a little harsh, when they do so...

Hey, you made a grammar thread! Great!

1. Most defiantly. Without grammar, misunderstandings run amok.
2. Yes.
3. It really bugs me. What really gets me is the use of the Astrix as a sort of stage directions. *Bashes head on keyboard* See?

Bottom line is that communication requires structure,
Pro tip: Using phrases like "Bottom line" and "end of argument" makes you look like a knob. I'm hilarious.

I try to make grammatical correct posts,
You do fairly well. Sometimes the urge to correct your grammar is overwhelming, but I manage to resist.

I try to write with proper grammar whenever I can, even online. I'm an engineer so the few times I put words on paper, are when I can practice writing and I don't want to get used to writing incorrectly because its bound to affect how I write, when I need to write something important.

1. Not particularly. I dont think it matters too much. As long as you can get the meaning then its fine, as long as its not too bad.

2. Errrm, I would say I wirte the way i do out of habit, not out of desire and efort. Its just the way i naturally type. I do shorten some words eg 'your' becomes 'ur'. If other members shorten their words too then thats fine as long as it is understandable.

3. Again as long as its understandable then no.

Generally i think people should lighten up. It is a gaming site, not exactly formal. I can see why people do strive for grammar as it makes them look more intelligent than other users, but really i dont get it when people hype about it. Go find a real issue.

hahaha I like woody's response. Very well put. It doesn't necessarily matter, and it doesn't bother me either. My writing style is my own preference. I do shorten tons of words though when I send text messages though

The only thing that does bug me is when people change the words so much that you struggle reading it. The shortening of words is for making writing and reading quicker. It makes it so much harder when the words become encrypted.

1) Yes, especially if you want to write a book in a forum post.
2) Yes, because people respect you more if you use proper grammar.
3) No, because people can do what they want to do, and that doesn't bother me.

Heeey!! Well, seemingly not good enough, if the urge is overwhelming...
I have kongruens problems.... And general German problems, but that is pretty much because I fail at that language....

Poor grammar makes you look like you are 6 years old.

hehe. That is most definetely true.
Sometimes it is hard to tell whether people do it on purpose, they really can't spell, or they made a typing mistake.

1. I think grammar is VERY important online. Take an online debate for example. Your argument matters the most but it can me significantly weakened with bad grammar.

2. I do strive for proper grammar online. The only thing I don't really mind is capitalization.

3. Text speak is....okay. I would really rather see everything spelled out.
