Hey guys, I'm back! After reading around, it looks to me like the other topics are a little too hot right now, so I'm making my own. What do ya guys think? Are all humans, by instinct, selfish?

You're oversimplifying human beings. How does fight or flight relate to hunger? How does either of those responses cause hunger, other than the obvious need to ingest more calories to maintain the ability to do either?

The fight or flight response relates to hunger, because it is the most basic human emotion, all subsequent emotions are derivations from this basic response. Because of this, without the fight or flight response, one would be unable to develop any further capabilities and would be unable to survive independantely, and would be, in the PC use of the word, extremely retarded. One would be able to feel hunger, but would lack any further understanding on how to fix the problem.

Another thought. Even though i find it highly unlikley, there is a small chance that you may not be selfish outwardly. But it doesnt stop there. everyone has at least one selfish thought, no matter how cincere they may appear or act. It is immspossible, I repeat, Immpossible to not be selfish. And the whole thing is natural. It is the way our brains work.

Of course, it is probably impossible to live your entire life without being selfish to some degree, but whether that is due to situational or dispositional factors is another matter. There has been no conclusive evidence to suggest selfishnesss is an innate emotion, it's just very useful in the environment most people live in.

Selfish behaviour normally brings an individual some sort of benefit ,(albeit at the expense of others), therefore it is useful.

Usually, but not always. And alot of the time when it is, it can actually harm you more than you gain from it.

That may be true, but listen to this, if you were going to be killed or whatever the worst thing you can think of is, unless you killed someone, would you? That is almost always yes, unless you think you wouldn't, i'm sure you would, thus proving that selfishness is part of the human mind, you cant not be selfish

Wrong, if you kill the attacker it's an act of self defense, if you kill someone else for your own needs then you're obviously a selfish scum, but people with Honour and Princibles wouldn't do that, we had more honour a few million years ago as cavemen than now

Where did you get that idea? Also, just saying "million years ago" is trying to start another Christianity vs Atheism thread, so don't be doing that.

Yeah..... About that I am sorry then, if or not we were cavemen we did, the idea was how everything came after it - Medieval people had much more honour, the only country I know that has at least a small sense of honour as a child are the asian ones, China and Japan etc, because if you look around other places, not all but a few then you'd find there's alot of stupid "gangsters" who would attack you for nothing, they think they're tough but they're weaklings both physically and mentaly, they need a group to do it with and they just do whatever their told....

But it still goes on that people weren't naturally selfish lol

Yes, being selfish is a natural behavior that ensure a persons survival. All animals insâ ictually want to survive. Humans are the only ones that can override this and save others, etc. But we still have those feelings, and since we developed material things, not just things that we absolutely need for survival such as shelter, food, and tools, our selfish tendencies apply to those too.

Theres no way around it. You can teach yourself and be raised to be giving and unselfish because we have the ability to do that, but internally we still want things, and many things. We can tone it down tho, and be giving and courteous.

The baseline is that all humans are naturally selfish . We can control it and suppress it but it will always be with us.

I think humans are just animals, and they are hiding behind the civilization.
Why there is police?
Why people have to have a story of hell? Because than people going to be scared about going to hell, and they won't steal, kill, etc.
Why we have to have rules? Because without this things people become crazy.
Just imagine the end of the world. People rob everything for enjoy their last minutes on the Earth.
You can't shit wherever you want. Because it's odd, and because of the law.
But at about 02:00 I was looking out of the window, and I saw a man shitting on the street!!! When people think they are alone they think they can do whatever they want...
Yes, people are selfish. Naturally.
