The "eye of God" is just the nickname of a nebula that is shaped like an eye.

Ok am I the only one who already new about the eye of God "NGC 7293". I thought it had been known abour for ages but it was in the Daily Mail (I know sorry) like last week end. Wiki says it was discovered pre-1824 so how is this news.

I just love space it is a brilliant way to think of the insignificance of existance in this universe. The numbers and figures are astounding. A simple way to think of things:

If in a scale drawing of the solar system the Earth was the size of a pea, Jupiter would be about 300m away and Pluto (technically a dwarf planet but worth a mention) would be 2.5km away and the size of a bacterium. Proxima centauri (the closest star to ours-4.2 light years away) would be about 16,000km away on the same scale. Our solar system is well small-fry compared to some, but all the objects in it (the sun, planets, asteroids etc.) only make up a trillionth of the available space. "Space" is an apt name for it. What I was always taught was the sun was in the centre then you move out and at the edge is Pluto. It took the voyager craft 12 years to get to Pluto. Past Pluto is the Oort cloud and at the same speed as Voyager you would need to travel for 10,000 more years. Pluto is a 50,000th of the way to the edge of the solar system. The Oort cloud is may be about 1 light year from the sun yet it is still held within its gravity. The average distance between stars is 30 million million km. I'll rounf this off with Douglas Adams (again) "Space is big"

Silly me, I always thought it was called "Devil's Eye."

Anywho, it wasn't discovered last weekend, it was discovered in the 1800s by Karl Harding.

This is a discussion about the vast topic (excuse the pun) "Space." It is not limited to the "Eye of God."

So no, it should not be locked unless there is an older thread about the same topic.

Yeah no need to close this it just needs a topic of discussion, I fear I have exhausted my "interesting" facts about the vastness of our Solar system.

Any ideas anyone?

Ummm, space is defined by the things in it? (always boggles my mind)

I personally think space is like Asteroids (only 3D & with a much bigger screen), that way it can be infinite and growing (the screen is growing)...

OMG, it's the eye of Sauron! Lol

I think that the most amazing thing about space is how all the stars are formed, now I shall explain if you like it or not, they begin life in a nebula which could be called a "stars nursery" they become condensed masses of gas that ignite on fire and burn for thousand or millions of years, just amazing, and I know i could be more elaborate but hey Im only in 7th grade.

this is astronomy, there are many many more things you could think of with the word space

i remember somewhere that there were two earth like planets on the edges of the inhabitant zone i'm guessing it's beta 636 & 637 or something

Gliese 581c is the main Earth-like planet I knwo of . A bit bigger than earth but it is orbiting a red giant 20 light years away.

ridiculous note in the newspaper:

"It's got the same climate as Earth, plus water and gravity."

It has gravity? really? Who would have thought it.

Lookin gup these planets is very funny. Their 20 odd light years away but are being talked about like they are a short rocket trip away.
