and plus other iraqui's viewed what the man did as an insult to his position also wouldn't u through a shoe or worse at someone who you believed had destroyed your home and ur country?

No matter whether what the moral import might be, if you're willing to make an example of yourself on such an international scale you should be prepared to face similar repercussions.
That said, I'm not sure there's much of a precedent for this. I mean the president of Iran (Ahmedinejad, if I recall correctly) was heavily lambasted when he visited the US but this appears to be on a completely different scale.
The man has become a national icon and has gained the support of his family and friends.
For those who didn't know, if he was to have thrown his shoe at any regular citizen, he would have received 3 months jail time. But since he threw them at a national figure, and he was charged with a count of battery.
He knew what would happen, but he represented the opinion of most of the Iraqi's
I agree. I don't know how can you expect a worm welcome from someone who you occupied. Three years is harsh but I guess Iraqi authorities had to give him that sentence.
