I'm assuming that this idea will be shot down and to be honest I don't even know if it's possible to set a minimum character limit for game comment, but I'm asking for opinions anyways. Personally it just bothers me when i see the same users saying OK, sucks, boring, or good for every single game they play. I'm not saying all comments have to be huge, I'd just like more than one word.

Tell me what you guys/gals think about it(and tell me if it's even possible). Thanks :]

Maybe set the limit at like 20

But then I could simply right
suckssuckssuckssucks

but then again, you could simply write 'sucks' and it would be just as bad, it certainly wouldnt be making anything worse would it? people can currently write almost as much as they like, so could technically write sucks 100 times, which is irritating. it would just encourage people who really did want to leave their rating for a game to add something extra, even just a small comment... i don't see what harm it could do!

Now, when the game comments say "quick reviews", it doesn't mean "type a comment so fast that
when you go to comment on another game, you still have to wait for the 30 seconds to finish",
and repeating after that, that's not what we want. You would think you would be more frustrated
waiting on the 30 seconds to finish than typing a well-written sentence and are already done. If we
get through to the people that typing a sentence is "faster" than typing 3 words, then they will
do it, because they will do anything to get more AP, right? I don't care one single bit if they
spam for AP, just that they put a shred of effort into it.

I think that if what they say is honest, it's okay, unless they cuss or something.

As previously said if someone was to spam they'd simply get flagged. I'd really love to see this idea be implemented.....

I concur! I'm tired of reading people give comments saying
"awesome, cool, ok, sucks, boring" etc etc. WHY is it this is what I would prefer to see =\\ Otherwise I think it as spam (and that's a lot of spam to go through to get to a good comment when I'm bored and want to see what other people said on the game).
It won't completely solve it, but it will help - especially since, as has been said, they'll get flag if it's blatant spam. It also might improve feedback for authors, who don't want to see that spam, but nice posts with constructive criticism in there.

Seriously, every single game I play I see one word posts on just about the whole page. it's pretty lame....they might as well just be still saying "FIRST!" even though they're the 1,727th person to leave a comment.

LOL yeah, and what's sad the whole 'First' bit does usually go for a page or two lol.

I do really wonder how at least a 5 or perhaps 7 character limit, as it is simple to leave a comment saying you like the game without writing a merit or something along those lines, I think.
Although, 5 word limits still are pretty open:
| hello | cool! | lamez | yeah. | whatever | u fail |
Soz yeah...if a little limit were to be put up it'd probably be at least 7 then.

Would it hurt anything if this 5-7 minimum was added? Probably not. Then again, would it help anything if this minimum of 5-7 was added, or would it just infuriate users and provoke gibberspam->fgjfhs< as opposed to the shortwrdspam ->good<?

yea i think it would be good if we put a 5word minimum so people just writing one-two words cant do that

I agree with you're idea but everyone here knows that every character limit we put they could simply write the same word again and again with spaces and numbers and other things.

It's been stated multiple times that the people who decide to go over the minimum character limit while spamming will be flagged.

I think this idea would help the site and definitely help the developers. A lot of the developers actually go through their comments to see if they can dig up any good ideas a user might've suggested, but it's kind of hard to find a good comment when 75% of them are 1 or 2 words long.

Aye kesse. And when they have to go through 15+ pages of sheer spam for new games, or in popular games, it can amount to 50+, then it takes out of their time that they can do other things, or be improving on a game / making a new game.

That, and when they DO get to a good comment, it is those comments that developers use to help them. They can't learn from things by themselves, they learn from feedback - sort of hard with spam in the way.

Long spam is worse than short spam.

We need a limit still...

(And to brighten up this thread, a really long post that lays everything else in shadow)... Please notice the pun. It was funny, right? Oh, forget it.

Hm, we could be really draconian about it and automatically ban anybody we see making such comments, as they're obviously there to spam.

Really? (Notice how this is only word please, and mock my sarcasm)

I'm liking the idea of a minimum character limit more and more every time I check game comments.

Yes! Shoot those demented spammers in the head. (Sings a very nasty song)

could have a minimum word count rather than character

That would mean more coding, because then you would have to count the amount of spaces, and not just characters.

I think this idea isn't very bad, but the slight flaw is, that word count or characters, people could simply write gibberish like

ewkjgrfbadhj jhergvhbdvkqjehb ebhqerbvq, dnbv jkevbqerbv herqbvqbrv hjerqbhmedb,v hbvqebvmn,q jbvqbv, nqmds jheqgbhjeb jhvbqhjv qhjwvbqwhjb

And get through the filter and security. I mean, then mods would have a very good reason to kik people out and ban them, like Strop suggests:

Hm, we could be really draconian about it and automatically ban anybody we see making such comments, as they're obviously there to spam.

Draconian: Excessively harsh or severe
Yes, that's harsh, but if people wrote similar comments like my example up there, it would be a good reason. Gibberish is no excuse.

It also might improve feedback for authors, who don't want to see that spam, but nice posts with constructive criticism in there.

That softened my heart there. Authors really, really want criticism of any kind really, mostly good, but without bad one they wouldn't know how to make the game better next time.

if we put a 5word minimum

5 words? You gotta be kidding me! Ten or fifteen words!!! Otherwise it would reduce spam by about 2% because spammers could easily write 'good, bad, funny, macabre, stupid' and have a right laugh when they get through the security feature in as much time as previous.

It's been stated multiple times that the people who decide to go over the minimum character limit while spamming will be flagged.

So if I were a spammer and wrote 'My name is Bob and I live in the White House and I thought this game was good' it would be flagged? Not bad...

15+ pages of sheer spam for new games, or in popular games, it can amount to 50+

You have no idea how nasty comment spam can be. The words bad, good, funny, stupid, okay, cool, awesome, weird all become monotonic and have no more emotional meaning to non-spammers. In other words:

Definition of a spammer: Somone who has achieved to make simple words seem unrealistic because they use them so often in one word sentences they ruin the whole fun of seeing them.

Long spam is worse than short spam.

brenda, please clarifying what it is that you're approving. That's about as useful as commenting a game with 1 word.

unlimited, the only argument you seemed to bring up in that entire post was the increase in longer spam. It's already been said that any spamming will be flagged. It really isn't complicated whatsoever. As long as the posts we flag are taken care of in the correct way the user won't have the urge to spam anymore.
