I think there are major steps that are ought to be taken for the improvement of US education.
The national results in international comparisons have often been far below the average of developed countries. In OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment 2003, 15 year olds ranked 24th of 38 in mathematics, 19th of 38 in science, 12th of 38 in reading, and 26th of 38 in problem solving.[75] In the 2006 assessment, the U.S. ranked 35th out of 57 in mathematics and 29th out of 57 in science. Reading scores could not be reported due to printing errors in the instructions of the U.S. test booklets. U.S. scores were far behind those of most other developed nations.[76] . Bill Gates believes that the American high school is "obsolete"
Thats some statistics for you. I can feel the ineffectiveness myself, being a student.
I can honestly say that I don't learn shit! Maybe some things in math, but forget next year. Were given kiddy assignments to do just for the sake of having enough total points. Your in 8th grade and they ask you to fill in a map. In 9th grade, you have to make a soundtrack that relates to some dam fiction book no one cares about. The A graders seem to be the ones that obey unquestioningly.
Where do teachers get their ineffective methods anyway?
In some classes, I feel I know more then my teacher. Maybe this is bad luck but my biology teacher hardly knows what his talking about and I can catch him give the wrong answers..
amerikans skools r grate, thay teech us lotz of stuuf. Seriously, the education system really needs to be fixed. I'm one of those "A graders," and I'm amazed at how many people are failing the easiest classes. Part of it has to do with all of the teachers (with tenure, of course) who make no effort to interest kids with the material. A lot of the failing kids are making no effort because they don't care, they hate the teacher, etc. If teachers did more to interest the kids and actually make school fun, there would be better grades and education.

I totally agree. Teachers need to not only teach the material, but also motivate the students to learn. It's been said many times on this thread, but students are not going to retain the information and do well in school if they do not care about it.
I have some motivation for you. Let's do the Jap thing. If you can't pass a class you repeat it. If you can't pass High school exams, you don't make the cut and you get kicked out and have to start working for a living doing manual retard labor.

Are you me? That's like exactly what I think. Despite being Australian~
Then again, whenever a teacher says 'This will be fun class' you should generally run like hell. Teacher funz are not funz...

Many continental European nations use similar systems, with varying degrees of success. I am against it because it certainly causes disparity between the clever and the stupid, possibly leading to conflict. It also increases the level of corruption in the school system, just take Italy as an example.
They have a rigid schedule and will not even entertain the idea of doing something different.
Coming from someone who went through the British state school system, I would say this was a major problem. Thanks to good old socialist democratic labour, everyone should e taught in the same way, regardless of the results to ensure equality. The problem is, there is little to no innovation involved. It might be different in other parts of the country, but that certainly was my experience down in London, as well as most of my old school friends going to other schools around the city.

And this is different from how it's supposed to be? If someone's too dumb to pass school, he doesn't really deserve to get a good job and make a lot of money. Giving people jobs regardless of ability is what completely wrecked the USSR.
School is just way too rule oriented and most of the teachers are angry lesbians who like to give their male students a hard time. Sure they claim that they're preparing you for the "real world" but their definition of the real world is warped. That's why i protested most of my classes by never doing any of the work and never listening to what they said no one railroads me

I have never felt that any of my teachers were sexist against the male students. I have also had many male teachers, so not all teachers are "angry lesbians". In fact I believe that most teachers are very educated people, and it is hugely disrespectful to call them angry lesbians.

How exactly is their definition of the real world warped?

Whether you like it or not, going to some sort of school is required in most countries. It is just plain stupid to not do the work. If you do that you are going to set yourself up for failure, as you will not be admitted into most colleges and as a result you will not be able to obtain as good of a job.
