Why would you say you're not into bands like Sum 41, Slipknot, or Rise Against? None of those bands are metal.

And if you want recommendations you're gonna have to name some metal bands you like so people can get a better understanding of your taste.

LMFAO. it seems to me like you are the type of person who likes softer metal..

Try "System Of A Down".

Tool is pretty good, trippy music though, hmm... modern, without any screaming at all??? gonna be kinda narrow search here (checking my iTunes)
well, not exacly going strick on the genre issues, so some may not be what you are looking for, but its a start:

All that Remains, Coheed & Cambria, Avenged Sevenfold...
Bullet for my Valentine (yes, some screaming)
If you like the instrumentals of metal, the screamo bands often have some of the best... (think about it, there isn't much going on the vocals... so its gotta be good somewhere else) Ex. Besieged (search em on myspace or last.fm they are more of a local band for me, not much on youtube yet)

try giving a more specific image of what you like.

Which type of metal? Softer? Or harder?

Just to clear something up real quick... Just because a band has growled or screamed vocals does not mean they are screamo.

well nickel, technically thatd be the defining factor of the genre.... screamed vocals....

Yes, but sometimes the screaming part is just part of the song. Actual screamo bands have all there songs being screamed or yelled.

For example: the album "Incredibad". It is comedy hip-hop, but in a couple songs they scream a few words.

So every death, black, and thrash metal band is screamo? NO, that's not the way it works.
