In my church, speaking in tongues refers to learning another language while being a missionary. I've seen people at other churches speak in tongues, but I don't know if that's a God-given gift or not. I personally don't speak in tongues myself. Even if I did, I wouldn't discuss it here, because that's a personal gift.
Thank you snakebite that was exactly what I was after Tongues is a spiritual gift that you can either speak or inturrpuet. Last night in church we were leaning about it so I was seeing who else beleived it was real. I understand that you can pray tongues (only god understands not even you). There's normally speaking in tongues like God speakng strait through you, but you need someone to inturrpurreta it. Otherwise It's useless if no one's there inturpurt it.
That's one reason not to discuss it. No one really understands it until either they speak themselves or see it. I remember a time when I was at a church camp, and one of the counselors was trying to teach me how to speak in tongues. Obviously it didn't work because she couldn't teach me something that God gives when the time is right.
Ya last summer I was at a camp and one of the counselors were praying for my in tongues and he didn't even realize it. I looked up at him and asked what he was sying and he had know idea.
