Our nation is mostly run on fossil views and other nonrenewable technologies, I personally think this will keep us content for roughly 70 years. After, we will be in a rut, and hopefully, before we run out of sources, we could invest in renewable energy.
If you believe in renewable energy, what source do you think would be the wisest? (Wind Power, Hydropower, etc.)
Solar power is the best option, (In my opinion) especially after looking at the Pros and Cons.
I don't think just using 1 type of renewable energy will work, we need to use them in combination e.g. solar, wind turbines and hydroelectric are a good combination.
@ kirby, scientists already knew how to do cold fusion a few years ago, but they have trouble containing the reaction. The point that orion and I were debating about was nothing like that.
It was the product of fission and fusion. 2 alternative energies that give off massive amounts of energy from little input.
But scientists call it Alternative energy because it is an alternative to using fossil fuels. The reason why they dropped the term "renewable" is because once you use 1 unit of energy, you wont get it back, it has become entropy. So please for all of you trying to rack up post counts and not read/comprehend the topic , at least get 1 thing right.
I believe we should continue using Fossil Fuels in our economy until we have enough wind turbines and nuclear power plants to sustain our country without it. Not only will this solve our energy crisis, but the nuclear power plants will also create many jobs the American people can obtain to sustain these plants.
I do not think we should switch due to global warming though. Global warming is fake, even Al Gore stated that it should be changed to Global Climate Change instead of Global Warming because the earth isn't really warming. It's caused by the shores erosion from the ocean. The Ocean pulls soil and sediment off the beaches and deposits it into the ocean, creating a higher sea level. This won't be a problem for...... A very long time.
Also, this energy switch will cost alot. Wind turbines and Nuclear Power Plants are not cheap to make, and with our current national debt it will be even harder on our wallets. I think the government should first figure out how to pay off the national debt before starting this major switch.
yes, cold fusion is generally viewed as a myth, it's 'hot' fusion that is mostly interesting to scientists! (harking back to page one)
back to regular renewables, bring 'em on in my opinion i for one not only agree with the economic and ecological advantages they propose (largely) but i'm also very interested in science in general, and i like to see what they come up with :P
I personally think that nuclear power plants should not be used. Go ahead Russia I don't care use em' all you want but they are VERY dangerous in the long run.
Nuclear Power plants are safer than a bomb shelter. In fact, we already have some in the country right now.
Yes I know that but the big ones near cities are bad ideas. You don't want people like Homer Simpson working there do you?!?!?!
They would deserve a nuclear explosion for hiring a stupid person to work at a power plant. Even if they did hire somebody of low intelligence, there is still a lot of janitorial jobs to be done. Also, the chances of something stupid happening are slim due to the high security of nuclear power plants. Like I said before, they are virtually safe from terrorists because they are stronger than bomb shelters.

Personally I'm not a big fan. It's not just the plants, but the waste storage centres. Most terrorists couldn't figure out to make a bomb, but waste in the wrong hands could still do serious damage.

Nuclear power plants are on of the greatest sources of renewable energy out there. And I doubt anybody would get any nuclear waste out of there with all the security measures set in place. After 9/11 we have begun taking security seriously, so there is not much to worry about there.

I'm talking about the UK. I wouldn't trust the average bobby on the beat running a sweet shop let alone a nuclear waste facility. I'm sure the US have got it locked down, but you guys don't have as big a domestic terrorism problem as we do.

Ah, I see your point now. Yeah, I was talking about America =).
But there is no way to get rid of the waste and they DO give off some pollution.
It has been proven that nuclear power plants give off virtually no waste at all. Any waste they may ever give off in their lifetime is tiny, and would not matter to the climate at all. I have researched alternative sources of energy, and I believe that this combined with wind/solar power could provide a Foreign oil independent country.

yea... you just dump it into ponds....
on a more serious note, They actually package it into a leak proof container, as in you can detonate over 600 kilos of TNT on it and it even wont show signs of stress. They bury these containers in a plot of land set aside by the government. After a few hundred, or maybe thousands of years, the radioactive materials will have decayed into lead.
