In my High-School, im a freshmen. I live in a town with like a 98% white majority, so theres no gang activity or nothing of that sort. Anyways, fights are constantly happening. Even if one guy was only fighting out of self defense. My school has this "0 tolerance" policy. Shouldn't people have a right to defend themselves in certain situations? A few years back I got suspended for pushing a person...its that ridiculous. My friends have even gotten detentions for speaking their mind. (in a respectful way, of course)
So I want to know what some people's opinions are on the topic, and if you know of any places that also relate to the stupid policy.
Self Defense I thought was 3 punches then you are allowed to fight back, well anyways schools have to be strict because they want to limit fights and keep police cruisers out of the parking lot.
Well, the teachers that are the most stritct for me, are the ones who have been schooling for 20 years, and after being toilet papered, egged, cussed at, called a crappy teacher, flipped off, interrupted, etc.
They are the ones who rap your knuckles with a ruler if you talk out of line.
Is that a private school? Seems like private schools are stricter than public a lot of the time.
Nope. It's a public school. It's a really smart public school though. Has a high API rating or something. The High school next to us is just as academic but much more loose.
My school is similar but the fights in my school are probably way worse than yours. For example, kids have gotten cracked ribs, fractures, and even broken noses in fights. So my school has a reason to be this strict.
If someone takes a serious punch at me, I'm damn sure going to throw one back. I don't care if I get suspended for it, its not right to let people get beat up before they can do something about it and not get punished. Rules that don't make sense in practice really shouldn't be followed. Unless they can justify it in some legitimate way (which they can't seem to do with some rules) whats the point in following it? I don't care about getting in trouble if its for something I believe in.
With regards to the OP, no I believe that your school is doing the right thing. It may seem unfair, but if everyone understands the consequences of what they do, fights wouldn't happen in the first place. If you have ambiguous school rules, ie, self defence is ok for example, it would be too difficult to distinguish between agrressors and defencists. Zero tolerance is the best policy. The lack of said policy has dire consequences, as can be seen in the British school system.
I went to an inner city London school. Fights were common place, sometimes just knuckles, other times blunts or knives. Teachers were equipped with walkie talkies to call for assistance if fights broke out. Security gaurds armed with batons patrolled the halls. That's the type of environment that's spawned on the flip side of the argument, when no one's accountable for violence.
@Talo: Have you ever seen a white gang? lol?
You may laugh at 'white gangs', but whites were just as serious a problem as blacks were. The common theme was that they were mostly immigrants, mainly from Poland and other eastern European nations. That's not to say there weren't native British gangs, but they weren't as numerous.

I believe there were also Irish too. They were considered the "weaker" race in the isles. Branching from the animosity most of them form gangs.
