I would have to say Gandhi was the greatest leader.

Not only did he work to help his own people, but through that his ideas were passed along and are now part of the entire world's view of oppression.

I would have to say I really like what Pope John Paul II did. He was a wonderful man who brought hope to the world.

So the opposite of the worst dictator thread. I quite like Henry VII, yes he was mean with his money especially on the later years. But he did well notably signing the Medina del Campo with spain and strengthening the throne for his heirs.

Nelson is a favourite of mine as well (I can't find the book on him right now though) he was tactically very good and inspiring. Plus he has some good quotes.

Jesus is debatable, not only because I'm Atheist and don't believe in him, but also because he spread a religion that resulted in the deaths of millions, no matter how positively you might look at him that's undeniable. Maybe that wasn't his intention, but mistakes are part of peoples legacy's too.

As for the greatest person...I don't think there is one. Some are better than others in some areas, but everyone has their flaws, and its hard to judge a single person better then millions of others when its such a broad topic.

Even though I'm a Christian and believe in Jesus I think we're actually talking about full humans, not spiritual beings. Just want to clear that up.

Sorry to say this, but im gonna hafta say Hitler was one of the best. He successful brainwashed hundreds of thousands of people to kill others they didn't know, it would be hard to beat that.

I am guessing from the OP you do not just mean statesmen, but leader of any kind, which makes this pretty vague.

If I had to choose anyone it would be John Churchill. His could have been the King of England, but instead turned it down to become, in my mind, the most successful general this country has ever seen. It was him who laid the foundations of England to become a bonafide military power. We English owe him a great deal. Without him we could have very easily been conquered by the French.

Intersting. Why do you think this? He is certainly iconic though I don;t know much about him.

In his earlu years he certainly accomplished a lot. Ousting a corrupt, inept regime and raising the standard of living for your average Cuban significantly. For a time they had some of the best free healthcare in the world. However, inevitably, as with all authoritarian 'communist' regimes, the system gradually became as inept as the administration it ousted in the first place.

Is Fidel Castro still in power?? I know that he became deathly sick but I think he came back to power. I'm not sure though... Thats why I'm asking.
