So I was reading the news earlier, and I found this story
Basically, it says that an Ohio a teen is going to be suspended and not allowed to attend graduation if he attends prom at his girlfriends public school. Now, you guys are probably asking why. The answer is because his private fundamentalist Baptist school prohibits dancing, holding hands, and rock music. All of which are common at prom.
In another article that I read (sorry, can't find it again) it says that if he participates in sex or using alcohol during the prom he will be suspended.
So, what do you guys think about this? Do you agree? Disagree? Do you think that suspension is a fair punishment? Let's hear it.
Excommunication used to be something a lot more common. If he belongs to a part of a religious school/order that's a private organization, they have a right to tell him how to act in & out of school, lest they kick him out.
I think it's a joke, but I'd never attend nor send a child to a religious institution in the first place. That said, they have every right to restrict his extracurricular activities so long as he is a member of the school. If he decides to leave, he can do whatever the hell he wants.
Yea, i read that today earlier as well. And personally, i think it's just bull. to prevent him from going to his girl friend's prom just because his school prevents rock music, dancing, and holding hands at his school is just ridiculous. Also just those roles I think are crazy. Seriously, dancing and rock music are just forms of self expression and holding hands is just, what the heck? What's the matter? Do they think that one minutes their going to be holding hands and the next minute in bed with clothes flying off?
The rock music and whatnot is pretty unokay. Okay I meant REALLY unokay. I mean, fundamentalist or not all 3 of those things are common anywhere. Are they not allowed to dance at their wedding? Can they only eat the cruddiest bread at the grocery store? That I seriously don't agree with. Not to mention that unless it's a boarding school, they have no right (and I beleive it's illegal) to suspend someone for affairs off school grounds.
That's like beating up a classmate outside of school and then coming back and not getting punished besides your parents (if they even care).
As far as sex goes, it's still not technically right but since it's a fundamentalist baptist church, that's what they taught him and he should have tooken the teachings to heart. Still iffy on this one but they shouldn't really go "GRR YOU'RE SUSPENDED" if he has sex. Alcohol is still serious though, if he's underaged. But then again I'm sure that children had drank fine wine with their bread way back when, didn't they? Well, even so I agree with alcohol, not sex (because he can just use a condom, the abstinence thing they're teaching in school is a bigg donkey load), and I greatly disagree with the dancing/rock music.
Rock music has been around for over 20 years, they should have freakin' accepted it by now. Freakin' hippies.
Rock music has been around for almost 60 years. Ever heard of the 50s? ---- This just goes to show how idiotic fundamentalists can get. This school has no right for this kind of thing (legal or moral) and the school is almost being pedantic about it's own teachings, and how they MUST be punished, even if they deviate off school grounds.
Well then again, the church has always been strict on music, often condemning it to the noise the devil makes (and sometimes that noise makes you wanna beat someone's head in) so it is understandable that a baptist school would go to such lengths and prevent their student from falling into a make believe hell.
At my high school these gay guys had to leave prom because they were making out, they were also suspended. I thought this was crap, as there was unbelievably dirty dancing going on and making out between heterosexual dance couples and none of them got in trouble.
I also got thrown out and suspended because I beat the crap out of this kid who came over to me and my friends and started talking crap about gay people, and my mom and bro are so I was insulted. I warned him, he didn't listen, and he ended up on the floor with a black eye and a broken nose....eh, though it sucked being suspended. I'm not such an angry guy anymore....
Oh and I disagree with the kid getting suspended, also, this may have already been mentioned, but isn't it moot point, I mean unless someone from is school is watching him at all times at this public school prom then it shouldn't be a problem.
I was disregarded from attending my lady friend's Prom as well, she had already bought the ticket's & I had rented the tux for the function.
But past mistakes I had at the same school bound me from not attending, three year's prior I was still paying for my youthful indiscretions & considered a threat to the other Prom goer's.
Though a close friend of mine, who is a convicted felon, a non violent DUI, the day after he turned 18, was aloud to attend.
School board's hold primitive un-lawful standards that force many youngster's to have void's in there life, because we don't meet/fit there mean's.

To the above article, I suggest holding a meeting with your school board- or council. I'm sympathetic towards you because of my situation.
If Prom hast already passed, I can only offer little advice, such as passing around a pamphlet for others to sign, along with parent's & teacher's who feel for you as well.
