You can, just combine high grade gem with a 1 grade lower gem. For me it was excellent choice to disable ultra-gems splashing everything with one hit.

GC Chapter Zero is very sensitive to your skills. When you get stuck somewhere, rethink your skills setup - I recently got stuck on like lvl 55 for the longest of times. THen I took a break, and when I came back I made major changes to my skills allocation and now I'm at lvl 70 or thereabouts. I've not had any overruns or losses since then.

The game is still ridiculously easy. If you relied on using grade 1 gems to combine before then you certainly didn't deserve to be there.

Id never even considered it. In fact you're the ONLY person I know who has. Hell even at level 80 I am getting 15-30k exp in normal modes.
