what if a wall surrounded every city in the world? a huge wall, as tall as sky scrapers, as thick as a house is wide. impenetrable and unclimbable, with razor blades sticking out of it. anti aircraft cannons at its top to destroy renegade planes, and soldiers with machine guns. would society all over the world benefit from this kind of wall? no wars, and no interaction with the outside world. protection from nuclear war, a silent and invincible guardian, unclimbable and indestructible. so would this wall be a good thing?
Not if there's no one left on the outside. That would be very hard to do though, there'd be groups of people who manage to stay outside the walls. This is very interesting though. The people inside of the walls would evolve differently than the people outside... So, what would they find if they broke down the walls? WOuld the other species accept them? Sounds like something in a science fiction book.
Well the people on the outside would be more advanced in taking care of themselves then the people on the inside. What I mean is, the people outside learn how to survive because they have to hunt & cook the food themselves.
While the people in the inside, they have can openers and whatnot. So in the end, who can take care of themselfe better? People on the inside or outside?
judging by some of your responses, i think i failed to elaborate clearly enough.
the only wars that can be fought are wars within the city. there can be no raids or invasions of other cities, the purpose of the wall is to keep people from doing that.
the cities are completely isolated from the surrounding world. the area that city coveres is the only area to move freely in. any other space outside of the wall like country side and mountains is free of people. the rainforests are free of people who cut them down. nothing enters the city behind the wall, and nothing ever leaves.
If nothing leaves or enters then your city would end up dead. I mean, how would you get your resources in and out of the city?
Without communication to the outside world, your city would not survive very long. Sure it could be done, but once your city runs out of supplies, what would you do then?
Wars within, would cripple your city, and in most cases destroy it. I really do think, someone would try to attack/invade your city. It's not like everyone would share the same mind set and not come looking for more resources, land, and controle/power. It's in the human nature.
By the way, is the land still devided into countries or are we going into city limits etc?
all right i'll change it. the walls surround countries, seperating them from one another. supply air craft come to drop off food, water, etc. however, there is no escape. what would this do to society around the world?

Alright, good, but it would still cripple the world. Here's why;
Well, huge walls sourranding each country would destroy communication, that itself would leave some countries to perish before anything else. A lot of third world countries depend on the UN for aid. So, no cimmunication, would mean destruction for these countries.
And then we have the warfare issue, a lot of countries would go to war, they can't help it, you know? They want their borders to grow and expand. So this would lead to war. Yet, a lot of warfare supplies are made from minerals witch are mined. So closeing off the 'outside' world would lead to more chaos.
Also, who would be the one delevering the goods to the cities?
Would that not mean, there are some people who are not apart of all of this 'wall-sense?' (Get it? Nonsense? Wallsense?)
What I'm trying to say is........Wall's would suck!
also i did make this concept into a story simply called "The Wall." its about life living inside the wall, with the people not knowing what lies outside the wall. in the story, from the view of the people "the wall had always been there. they had never known a time without it." in the end someone climbs the wall but is shot dead before he can tell about what lies outside. the guards protecting the wall then proceed to kill everyone, for fear that they would escape the wall. not a happy ending i know, but it goes to show that a wall around a city or country does not make for a happy ending either.

That sounds very interesting! I mean, I'd be very happy if it were turned into a novle!
