Gov. Eliot Spitzer Sen. John Edwards Sen. Jon Ensign Gov. Mark Sanford
Just a few in a long list of recent politicians caught cheating on their wives. I decided to make this thread when I learned that Gov. Sanford admitted to adultery, only a week or so after Sen. Ensign. Why do you think that politicians are so prone to commit adultery? Do you believe that a politician who is caught should resign, or do you believe that it does not interfere with their ability to do their job?
Lol, you're forgetting John Mccain; He ditched his crippled wife to marry an heiress, and was a polygamist for a while.
I honestly think that they have affairs for the same reason that a great deal of ordinary married men do; to seek escape and find something new.
The only reason it's a big deal is because Americans hold politicians to certain standards, and that because they hold such high positions of power, they are always in the eye of the media.
because they hold such high positions of power, they are always in the eye of the media.
That's exactly it. I doubt that politicians have more extramarital affairs on the average than other people with as many opportunities as they have, but politicians are a lot more likely to get caught. So at issue here is not infidelity, but stupidity. You know that if you're a public officer that reporters and people trying to dig up info on you will likely be following you to see where you go after work - much more than a wife would be. They should quit being so stupid as to get caught.
I don't think it has as much to do with the standards as much as Americans love of nosiness. I mean seriously, it's not just politicians, it's everybody who has been on TV or written a book. When people have their secrets, they need to stay secrets. Not have the mass media invade their lives everyday.
I would care if my wife cheated on me, or my girlfriend. And so would my family. Think before you say NOBODY cares when people cheat. Say most people don't care.
I don't think politicians do it more than regular people, but if they do it might be attributed to the power they hold. They feel they need to have something extra in their lives. But like I said, it probably doesn't happen more than with regular people.
...Again, nobody cares.
The people involved care, as well as the families of those people.
Obviously, people do care or it wouldn't be all over the news when someone famous cheats. And like everyone else has said, the people involved care along with the families.
A lot of people have affair, 90% of a married couples in my family have had affairs (why I have like 5 sets of grandparents).
Politicians are just people, they arent any different then you or I, they are just in the limelight so they dont have privacy very often and the media find out and jumps on the story.
When people have their secrets, they need to stay secrets. Not have the mass media invade their lives everyday.
When you become you politician you dont get to have secrets(at least personal) or privacy its just part of the job. :P
It's more because the media likes to give politicians hell than anything else, really. If an Average Joe, not famous peron cheated, It'd probably spread through the entire family, and in some cases, town if it was found out, but If a politician cheats, it gives us something to talk about. Standards are a big part of it; Quite a terrible event. But I'm convinced the media is a big part of it.
I actually feel a bit sorry for them when they're found out. They get what's coming to them, true, but It's utterly embarrassing when the entire country knows of it. Politicians are people too, one of them has to cheat once in a while.

I have to say I agree with Coko, the term nobody is perfectly acceptable when you're talking about the entire population. It's a figure of speech. Obviously someone would care but on a national level they don't matter.
