that was a couple hundred years ago, now they have gotten smarter. Also I got that from the book Dracula, and Van helsing's lost guide to vampires and lycans. I also looked on a lot of reliable sites. so that is my guide to the strengths and weaknesses of lycans and vampires.
Now, let me see. nWoD: Werewolves: Ragefrenzies, unable to keep a family up due to tribal problems and spirits, silver is painful and possibly deadly, unable to breed with other werewolves, constant guilt, has to acknowledge both sides of self. Tougher than humans, gifted, changes shape by will (unless it is the rage/battleform), strong, fast.
Vampires: hunger/rage/fear frenzy, light and heat, sometimes crosses/holy water (depends on the strength of the believer), no reflection/cannot be taped. Gifted, usually does well around humans, can turn a human by will (and hopefully succeed)...
Just 'cause I'm on a BtVS fan trip with another friend of mine these days...
Werewolves (because I haven't seen other lycanthropes in the series). Changes to beast form during full moon, lose themselves pretty much completely to that demon side. Continues to be normal humans (maybe with slightly added sensory perception) during days and non-full moon nights.
Vampires. Lose their soul completely, lose their body to a demon that takes over most of them. Might still be somewhat who they were, but most change to bestial hunters. Weak to sunlight, afraid of and burned by crosses and holy water, turns to dust when staked, cannot be out in the sun, does not feel remorse or guilt like a human does.
I think that's how they are in general in the Buffyverse, if I haven't forgotten something major...
So there: It sucks slightly less to become a werewolf than to become a vampire. The Wolf can even be controlled if you take time to learn to do so (or you can just embrace the killing...).
In World of Darkness (which Cen keeps referring to), it's a lot less bad to become either.
In general folklore... Oh screw general folklore, it's too confusing.
In Dungeons and Dragons, I'd muchly prefer being a lycan. Vampires start out under control of those who suÃred them, rather than just under guidance (as in WoD)...
Actually Vampires- Are not weakened by garlic or any of those items, Sunlight does not kill or burn up a vampire, Sunlight and garlic are more of an irratent to sensitive body parts like eyes, and skin. A vampire is not immortal they age, and an ancient will start to form wings, making them more into a demon persay. Silver is actually more lethal towards a vampire than a lycan. Vampires also tend to form apathetic groups tending to dress like punks and therefor... Vampires are not super strong at all, but are extremely fast.
Lycans- Are enraged beasts under no control from human stimulous, They have uncontrolled shifts,( not during full moons) but yes at night, any given time, especially if the lycan starves during human form, they cannot be effected by the sun because a lycans purpose once it is changed is to feed, after that the human who bares the curse wakes up not knowing what happened the night before, covered in blood and entrails. Silver does effect a lycan slightly but the real deal is copper. A lycan is extremely tough however, a youngblood vampire could never fight one and live to tell about it, an elder vamp however quite possibly could.
