Why does the United States citzens call themselves Americans when there is a South America too... So tecnically that would saying we are the only Americans?
well since the country is called united states of america, american is the only name i could think of that makes sense. i mean every other part of the american continent has its own name. like canada, mexico, brazil and so on. so i do not think that it bothers anyone that the us citizens have claimed the term american for themselves
Referring to citizens of the US as Americans has become commonplace somehow.
Since the name of the country is the United States of America, I think it is fair to refer to them as Americans. You can call people from Canada, Canadians and you call people from Brazil, Brazilians.
So tecnically that would saying we are the only Americans?
Well, we are technically Americans no matter how you look at so I don't see a problem with it... I see your point though.
Anyways ya no one else really calls themselves Americans they just call themselves, you know what ever country they live in (Mexicans, Brazilians, Cubans) Also there's not really anything else we could be called... Unitians? lol
its just a general term cause unitedstatsian would be retarded. people also call themselves something based on the state they live in, ex: texan's as oppose to americans
The continent is America, so there is a north and a south. North Americans are generally accepted to be Americans, whilst south of the border the individual countries don't tag themselves as Americans, even South Americans, they go by their own countries.
North and South America are named for Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer who mapped the coastal regions of South America shortly after Columbus discovered the American continents. The use of Vespucci's name was apparently the idea of a German mapmaker named Martin Waldseemüller.
After the North American colonies of Britain declared their independence and became a group of areas acting together as a sovereign nation, they eventually chose the name The United States Of America for their new nation. "The United States" refers to the group of regions acting as one, and "Of America" refers to where they are. If history had gone differently, any one of the nations on the American continents could have used the term "America" as or in their name. The U.S. just got it first.
North and South America are named for Amerigo Vespucci
That is currently being debated, another name put forward, Richard Amerik:
Richard Amerik was the chief customs official in late 15th century Bristol. Of Welsh birth or extraction, his name was possibly derived from âap Meriugâ, or âson of Meurig.â Duty collecting having apparently been a lucrative occupation, Amerik was the principal investor in John Cabotâs transatlantic expedition of 1497. Cabot allegedly repaid the favour by naming the newly discovered continent in Amerikâs honour. This does stand up because, as Amerik was the funder, his name would have been on the maps concerned.
