I am just wondering what my surname means, I am Polish and i have absolutely no idea what it means, apart from the "cki"art of it, i know what that means but that it? anyone got any ideas or can help, i done lots of research on it.
In france, my name is Etienne, which could be translated in Steven in English, but it's a greek name, which means The Crown... I'm rather proud of it, for theer's not that much people around hare that are called Etienne, and it's quite a nice name!
I saw a link to a book about your surname and it's use in history, kamrad.
I have no idea what my surname means. I was able to find the etymology of a variation of my surname. Not of my surname itself.
Anyway, apparently this is what was shown.
From the word barro meaning "clay" or "mud". Probably originated from an occupation of a person who worked with clay or mud, such as a builder or artesan.
As many in the Nordic countries, I have a surname ending on "-sen", which in most English talking places develops into "-son", simply because it is meaning "son of". Back in time, the son and daughters took the name of their parents and used it as their surname: "Johannesson/sen", "Frejadaugther/datter" and so on. Later on it became common to simply inherit the surname, and many of the most common surnames are ending on a sen/son.
On the Faroes it is still rather common to take the name of your parents, though.
My surname is Li, but I spell it with a Lee. There's a long story about how that came to be, because Northern Chinese folks don't usually do that, but whatever. Literally, it means "lum." The first bearer of the surname was one of the Five Mythical Emperors (who may or may not have existed), Zhuanzu.
There's a story that this predecessor, Emperor Zhuanzu, had a genetic condition where the last toe on each foot would be pointing inward a little rather than being straight like the rest of the toes, and the nail on last toe would have two sections, with one section appearing to override the other. Whether it's true or not, the fact of the story is that I do have this trait, and I do know several other people who have this trait.
Li was also the surname of the Tang Dynasty emperors, who reigned for 3 centuries. It also happens to be the most common surname in China, as well as the second most common in Korea.
