It is probably the cruelest disease out there. Could you imagine forgetting your friends and family, and in severe cases you forget how to eat! Don't really know why that guy would spend his time on Colony to be honest, but more power to him.
I think you would only not remember how to eat if you get alzheimer's at like 0 years old. Because eating is an innate behavior. A behavior your born with, so you can't forget it. I wouldn't think you would "forget" your family, because you either know them or you don't, if you get it before you get to know your family, you probably wouldn't be able to keep in your mind that that's your family. You can't form new memories. There isn't really a point where you suddenly know your family or not, it progresses slowly, but you can forget if you get into the middle of knowing your family.
