Today is the 70th Anniversary of the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany. 17 days later, the Soviets launched an invasion from the East and wiped Poland off the map. Not even two years later, the German-Russian alliance broke down, and the Germans invaded the Soviet Union. Over the next four years, the Soviets lost over 27 million people fighting back the Germans and toppling Nazi Germany. At the same time, the Americans pushed the Germans out of France and other Western nations hastening the collapse of the Third Reich.
World War II was the bloodiest war in history. It also required a huge sacrifice from all people of all nations to defeat Fascism. Because of the brave fight put up by the Allied Soldiers, the nations throughout Europe and the people in Japan live in a world without Fascism and militarism. It was a heroic struggle to liberate the world.
Well, during the Coldwar, the Americans sort of 'forgot/downplayed' the USSR role in WWII. And the Canadian/British/American commonwealth forces were lead by an American General.
And what about the partisans? And the Italians? Nobody ever gives them credit. -_-
bless those who fought for our country, we will never forget the brave men and women who put their lives on the line for our lives now. they gave their hour for our future.
They didn't put their lines on the line for us, the government forced them too. Of course most of them were too brainwashed with american propaganda to dispute the draft.
Let's not forget, the majority(if not all)of the soldiers on both sides were forced by the government to fight, be it Italian, American, Japanese, Soviet, German, British, Canadian, etc. They liked the war just as much as the civilians who were being occupied in Poland, France, Belgium, China, etc. Also, does anyone know about the Soviets fighting with the Japanese? I'd like to hear about that, I don't know much about it.
Yes, but after the invasion of Sicily, and the Allies had gained a foothold in Italy, Many Italians switched over the the Allied from the axis, and mostly helped with behind-the-lines sorta of stuff. I've seen an article which said an Italian company walked up to a German Batallion (the Italians had switched over, but the Germans didnt know that) and the Italians started shooting everywhere. 100% Casulties for the Italians, and 40-50% Casilties for the Germans.
Over 60 million people were killed in WWII and 6 million of them were Jews from all countries around the world in total.
That's true, by numbers the Russians and Chinese lost more people than the Jews. And the USSR and the Poles lost 13% and 18% of their populations respectively. However even though the Jews only lost 6 million (still a huge number), it was out of only 17 million worldwide. Which is over 35% of their entire population. And nearly all of those were civilian casualties. I think that's why people think of Jewish suffering when they thing of WWII.
the other thing why you especially remember the jews in ww2 is because they did not die in battle or battle related actions. most of them were killed in a brutal and inhuman way in a KZ. sure there also where other nationalities there but mostly jews. and the nazigermanies goal was to extinct every single jew from the planet. so even if the total number of deaths is not so huge in comparison to other nations i think that the jews had the hardest time during ww2.
