What would you say is the worse thing that happened? The fall of Rome that pushed us back in the Dark Ages? Possible Cortéz destroying the highly advanced (for their time) knowledge of the Mayans, which possibly could've kick-started us into populating a world by now, possibly...

This is a history thing - no present things such as the war in Iraq or Religion, though I don't support either.

Just to get in ther first with... the Holocasut. I'm not going to waste everyones time by explaining why everyone knows it was dispicable.

Outside of Human history I would say Permianâ"Triassic extinction because it was the worst extinctio event ever killing 96% of marine creatures for example.

Possible Cortez destroying the highly advanced (for their time) knowledge of the Mayans

The conquest of South America was awful mainly for the sheer number of people killed or put into slavery or mining but I don't think of the Mayans as advanced for their time... maybe for their area but if you compare their fabric armour and (comparatively) primitive weapons to the guns the Conquistadors were using by this time their technology wasn't brilliant.

I would have to say the fall of the Roman Empire for the western world. It gave rise to about 300 years of near anarchy.

Well, it's hard to say, Pixie, watch this documentry and u may have a very different opinion on the Mayans, though they weren't good with things like that, agriculture, Astronomy and such they were far better:

The fall of the Roman Empire sling-shotted Britain to the dark ages, they were feudal but when barbarians took over it just blew out of the picture, 800 years later, back to the Roman technology, in other words when it's 2809 we could have the technology we'd have now if the Romans didn't fall, of course it probably won't work that way, but hypothetically

And the Holocaust, ouch, definately not the worst one, but still very bad, one worse than that was the first war Britain Lost (as far as I know) - the Hundred Years War... 100 years they fought until Joan of Arc came, so that's probably more lives lost...

Another big one was the loss of the commonwealth, no offense but 12,000,000 people (12 million) from britain a very long while ago had control over the whole world, nearly whole, the majority, just 12,000,000.... amazing, it was lost mind you...

Other losses like the loss of Babylon (if it was real), 4000 years old... libraries burnt, cities destroyed, and this one had alot of info... terrible things :/

To be honest though it's very hard to find the worst one, to get it well you need to dig deep and fly high, and travel far.... a-and... I'm out, but it's not a joke, but if people gave their reasons, good deep reasons about it then it'll make their point much stronger, try it

I find it odd that the holocaust is used as an example of the event that caused the most deaths. Sure, Hitler was bad, but Stalin and Mao Zedong were worse, causing 15 to 17 million and 40 to 70 deaths, respectively.

The destruction of Ancient Library of Alexandria was one of the worst things that ever happened, so much knowledge was lost with it's destruction.):

Well, if Jesus really was God, then the death of God on the cross was probably the worst thing that ever happened.

Just after I pressed submit I thought of the Library but I didn't want to double post.

I will watch that in due course

The thing I find odd about the meso-american cultures is their military &quotrimitiveness". Some of the most important inventions have been due to war from the obvious weapons too medical innovations. The books I have read on the Aztecs, incans, mayans etc. paint it as a very violent place yet comparatively few innovations were made. Though as you say their understanding in other ares was good.

The thing that gets me about the holocasut isn't just the deaths but it is the systematic and targetted nature in which they happened. Whereas Stalins purges were against peole he didn't like or trust though many deaths weren't all to do with him you must remember how vast and "backward" Russia was in those days cotrol was very hard to exert and deaths on a local level may have had little to do with Stalin.

Well, if Jesus really was God, then the death of God on the cross was probably the worst thing that ever happened.

The death of God But (assuming your Christian) you would believe Jesus died for your sins so it is a good thing... hence Good Friday.

Do you think 9/11 is a laughing matter? Millions of American Christians were killed. And you're laughing at that.

know i had to laugh.
i am sorry to correct you, but the last time i heard about 9/11 it was more like 2500 victims.
as tragic as it was, it never reached millions, and it certainly havent been only christians in the towers and planes

Why are you counting the planes? They weren't people, they were terrorists.

yes all passengers on the planes were terrorists. what airline was that??
last time i checked it was more like 13 terrorist on the planes.
if you are too lazy to read a paper or watch some news, go rent the movie WTC with nicolas cage. it might not be great, but it surely will update you with some new infos about what happened 8 years ago

I think the figure 3017 and there were 6291 people injured. And that has led to 810 American deaths in Afghanistan.

well so 2500 was quite close for a guess. and even if we want to count the 810 soldiers who died in afghanistan(which i do not, at least not as 9/11 casualties) we are in the thousands and really far away from millions.
that was mi point. not to give detailed numbers.

Wasnt that because the imperialistic American system wanted to go to war for power? hmm

that i would rather see as fitting to the iraq war. but its truly off topic.

but there are a lot of posibilities how you can describe the motives of the united states. and it is not the place in this thread to try and figure it out
