They're willing to spend millions on megachurches and television shows but they don't give us anything. They'd rather preach hate toward other religions and instead of helping the poor they would rather convert them and convince them to "go with god"
It may have started as a troll thread, but that doesn't mean it has to stay that way. Take the thread that just recently died, about a more effective border between Mexico and America. It started out as a troll thread, but still sparked intelligent conversation.
The sad thing is that we shouldn't need churches to do good. People should naturally want to help people, with or without organized religion. But most Westerners are selfish and not willing to help in any way.
The churches I have been to do a lot of good for the community. For instance, every Wednesday my former church takes in homeless people, feeds them dinner, gives them a place to sleep, and makes breakfast and lunch for the next day. There is a whole organization of churches who do this so that the homeless have food and shelter every day of the week. I volunteer as much as I can to do this.
These are the kind of church programs which should be around. To many religious people are concerned with forcing their way of life on others. That is not what makes a good Christian. People (like me) despise most organized religion because they are about money, power, and force. If organized religion spent more time helping, rather than struggling for power, there would not be so much hate towards religion.
I wouldn't say that churches are useless. A lot of times there are priests that can give relevancy to the stories in the Bible and relate them to today. Churches are good places to feel a good genuine sense of community. And if people don't feel that then it's their fault for being so unsocial, not the church.
If organized religion spent more time helping, rather than struggling for power, there would not be so much hate towards religion.
I wish I could believe you there. I leave the religious people alone, but only until they start making discussions based on their religions or forcing their views on others. People should only willingly go to a church to convert, and there should be no debates with religion as their influence, because, against other religions, people are going to have opposite views entirely and nothing, except filling their hearts with hate, will get done.
