There is another topic yes but i wanted to show people an example.

these are two stories i completely made up, but think which one would you rather be in?

I'm laying in my bed, under my bed is a locked gun case, with a gun laying next to a loaded clip. I hear glass break down stairs and footsteps. I quietly get out of bed unlock my case load my pistol and creep down stairs. A big man wearing black clothes is standing in my hallway rummaging through a closet. I but my laser sight on him and wait for him he turns and pulls a knife i squeeze the trigger.

Now lets imagine the same situation without the gun.

I'm laying in my bed,I hear glass break down stairs and footsteps. I quietly get out of bed, and get my cell phone. I call 911 and the operator says there are 2 squad cars on the way. I hear footsteps coming up the stairs, i hide in my closet. The robber rummages through my room and comes to the closet, opens it and i tackle him onto the floor. He eventually gets the knife to my throat. The police show up and find out a man has had his throat cut and they have a man with a bloody knife in custody.

Now i completely made these up, but think if someone breaks in your house what are you going to do, call 911 and wait 5-10-20 minutes for police to get there and you may already be dead, or have some kind of protection close by.

How often does that happen though? Why not buy a burglar alarm?
Most burglars will be scared away by an alarm.

Oh so like having old with AK47's shooting at a maid.

Not really.

From what I've gathered from actual former burglars, the biggest deterrent is a big dog. A fancy lock can be broken, a fancy alarm can be fooled, and a fancy gun can miss. But big guard dogs are relentless, deadly, and fast.

Yea but a hardcore criminal is going to go in with intentions of getting money/expensive things and if he has to kill someone he doesn't care, its just another murder on his record.

I have a gun incase someone breaks in, you just never know. Burglar alarms are okay, but I wouldn't put my life in the hands of an alarm, if someone wants in, they'll come in. The police department in my town is way too overstreatched with response time around two hours at times. The main thing is, if you're going to have a weapon, know how to use it.

Having less person with guns is protection.
When a crazy guy can easily have a gun, how do you know that he will not shot you because he felt that he had to?

Bambam, I'm surer the testimonies of former hardcore burglars are more credible than your personal assumptions.

Why not have a burglar alarm, a big dog, and a gun?

If you want to rely on police, fine. They can take pictures of your dead body. Just look at europe, Norway has the highest rate of gun ownership, and one of the lowest crime rates.

A lot of the crime rate is cultural.

The USA is historically a rather violent culture, so violence is more common. *Modern* Scandinavia isn't violent at all, so violence is less common.

It would be best to have all three, lol.

I agree with 'Guns=Protection', and I would rather be in the first story, but you forgot a part to the right of the equation sign.
Guns aren't always used for protection, they are very dangerous on occasions.
How about this story?

I'm home late, from work. My boss had me do all the nasty jobs and told me to come in over the weekend. After work I went to the pub, to have a few drinks and relax. I'm not used to drinking, but felt I could take a little as consolidation for having such a lousy job.
I park my car on the driveway, and get out, pretty drunk and really p*ssed off at my life.
I get in, and hear strange noises, when I look into the living room I see my wife and my neighbor doing the dirty on my sofa, they haven't seen or heard me as they're both screaming in full extasy.
At that moment something snapped inside me. My angry, gloomy mood turned into cold, hard rage and the alcohol in my blood only makes it worse, influencing my thoughts.
I rush upstairs, into my bedroom wanting to smash something out of frustration, when suddenly I think about the locker under my bed. Inside it is a gun and a loaded clip.
It takes me some time to fumble open the lock, but that adds only to my anger as I load my gun and head downstairs.
As I come to the living room again, I'm just in time to hear them finish, and in rage I pull the trigger.

The police now have two dead bodies and a 'madman' in custody.

guns are meant for protection.

I am eventually going to use a gun for protection.

guns will never be made illegal in this United States of America.

I think it depends on who's holding the gun. Don't automatically condemn guns just because psychos and drunks get their hands on them. Guns can be used for immediate protection, though for the long term police is best.
