Well, the soviet union wasn't socialists. They just took every bodies stuff. Not socialism. Anyways, I believe that the economics eventually fail socialism.
But hey, one point for it, as long as we elect GOOD people to office, they will never abuse their power right? We are always such good judges of character..

Socialism is when the workers control the economy democratically instead of corporate owners. How is that a failed economic system? Authoritarian socialism might be, since it usually involves direct state control...
That is completely wrong, the Soviet Union had more tanks than any single nation, they had more ICBMs than anyone else, they controlled a huge amount of land, they had communist nations that would defend them in a time of war such as China, North Korea, or Vietnam, and they had spies. Not only that, their technology rivaled the western world's technology. They kept that up against half of the world for 69 years and you say that is a failing system?
Love her or hate her, I take Thatcher's view on the SU. They managed to sustain themselves through the use of force or threat of force, by taking money from their people, and massively increasing the size of their military.
As an aside, since when did the number of tanks a nation had become a measure of greatness?
The "theory" of communism I think is great because people are created equal. You get put into a job that'll best help your country.
The thing I don't like about now a day communism is that you can't really be open about your religion that you believe in, and now a day communism is really dictatorship.
Because workers controlling the economy doesn't work any better than corporations controlling the economy. In a socialistic economy, there is little to no reason to work, as you will always be taken care of. You run out of money.
People arent going to work their asses off with no visible result. People always work better when they take care of themselves first, then worry about those less fortunate.
Because workers controlling the economy doesn't work any better than corporations controlling the economy. In a socialistic economy, there is little to no reason to work, as you will always be taken care of. You run out of money
That doesn't even make any sense, you didn't even give a reason why socialism doesn't make people want to work.
True socialism gives almost everyone the incentive to work because when the upper class has been dissolved via progressive taxation or some other means, the working class will earn a lot more money than they would under a capitalist system. Socialism helps everyone, capitalism exclusively helps a minority of the nation and gives the most economic and political power to the nation's 1% richest; that one percent has unfair voting advantages and can run the economy in a very undemocratic way. That 1% will also try to tell you democracy doesn't work, that if everyone works hard they'll somehow all be millionaires or that those soft drinks like Coke belongs on t-shirts and cars.
Capitalism is undemocratic; we must replace our economy with something that actually gives the workers more voting power economically. In theory, capitalism offers the consumer a clever way to vote for what they want, but thanks to advertisements, terrible tasting coffee like Starbucks is now a huge hit.
Honsetly, why does over 90% of the nation always lose to the richest elite? How is that a true democracy? If it was truely "One vote, one person" and if ALL the people had some fair control over their government, I can tell you right now that the United States would not be as capitalist as it is now. All nations are controlled by corporations, rich people tell you what to do, what to wear, what to watch on TV, what to eat and even with children what to think. Now they have control in the government only because they can buy their way an ideal future of themselves.
You are running under the delusion that we are a capitalism. we are not. This is Corporatism. The elite would not be in control if the government did not help them along when they failed. They have no incentive to work because whether or not they work, they will still get paid. That means they will work just hard enough not to get fired, and as we see in countries with socialist tendencies, it is almost impossible to fire someone.
Maybe you are so weak that you allow yourself to be swayed by corporations, but I'm not. Socialism cannot remain democratic because when it all hits the fan, big government takes everything away from you.
Take FDR, the liberal sweetheart. People call him one of the greatest presidents ever. Sure, he was great in WW2, but he failed to get us out of the depression. Oh, and he also imprisoned thousands of patriotic, law-abiding Americans, without a trial, because their parents had the gall to be born in another country. Afterwards, it was just over. A half-assed apology was enough. Big government came and took everything away, then gave it back when it didn't matter anymore. Doesn't sound very democratic, doesn't sound like a free country.
I would like to restate that this is not capitalism. I would also like to remark on the lack of faith you have in the human race. We don't need the government OR corporations to control us. People should rule themselves, and socialism can only pretend it does that until its really time for leadership, then people realize what little power they have.
the working class will earn a lot more money than they would under a capitalist system.
The average wage for the working classes in the US was higher than that of the SU. I am a great believer in popular capitalism. The wealth creation of the super rich does benefit the poor, indirectly.

Advertising is part of the economy. People don't drink starbucks because it is well advertised. In fact, there aren't many tv ads or billboards promoting them. It is because they have a very good distribution network, and are a monopsony in the coffee bean industry. If people want to consume it, it's because they want to, not because they have been brainwashed.
They have no incentive to work because whether or not they work, they will still get paid. That means they will work just hard enough not to get fired, and as we see in countries with socialist tendencies, it is almost impossible to fire someone
You made a little contradiction there; if they work hard enough not to get fired, they are working hard. But then you just said it's impossible to get fired...
Socialism cannot remain democratic because when it all hits the fan, big government takes everything away from you.
No, you don't know what socialism is. It's not "the government takes everything away from you.", it's "the people control the economy." There is nothing more democratic economically. The constitution says it protects the intrests of the people not some of the people. It also states that it protects the general welfare of all. How does capitalism provide that when we have people losing their houses, losing their insurance or losing their livestyle?
Take FDR, the liberal sweetheart. People call him one of the greatest presidents ever. Sure, he was great in WW2, but he failed to get us out of the depression
Awwww, don't be mean. If he doesn't know then you'll just confuse him, and when they get confused they get frustrated, and when they get frustrated they get angry.
Eh, either socialism of Laissez-faire, capitalism obviously isn't working out to well. Socialism promotes equality and Laissez-faire promotes liberty, it's which ever one you value more that should effect your decision.
Nope liberty for EVERYONE, sure 1% may own most businesses but it completely removes the government from the equation. MY tax dollars can be used for me to start my own business instead of helping the idiotic CEO's of GM.
